In 1922 the Maryland field of racing produced for winning owners slightly more than 0,000 in excess of its total in 1921. This was no great sum, but it was a gain in a field that has about reached its rational limit of production. The increase was almost entirely due to the enterprising liberality of the Maryland Jockey Club, which, following a precedent it set in the Preakness Stakes of 191S, did not hesitate about splitting the Pimlico Futurity into two divisions with 0,000 added to each, simply to avoid the danger of starting a too large field over a narrow track. The record of the Maryland Jockey Club in the two remarkable cases is without precedent and the almost chivalric action taken redounds to its own peculiar and unshared glory. It was money given without any possibility of any recoupment. This club led in total distribution and as emphatically in daily average distribution. Laurel was second in both respects and its meeting was successful. Havre de Grace fell off in its total distributed, but to no harmful extent. Bowie, for the the first time, gave stake races at its autumn meeting. The experiment was so successful in drawing better horses than had ever before raced over the track that a repetition may be deemed assured. There is no valid reason why the same course should not be pursued in respect to the Bowie spring meeting. Here are some tabulations giving the essential statistics of a highly successful campaign over the Maryland tracks, great and small: 2 k s 3 3 f 3 r3 S3 wg o? H? cr gs- S2- Q Track and Mooting. Wilson belongs the distinction of leading the owners who campaigned their horses over the Maryland tracks. The determining factor in his case was Pillorys gallantly -won victory in the Preakness Stakes last spring. That favorite of Dame Fortune, Willis Sharpe Kilmer, was close after him in second place, due to the speed of his fine filly Sallys Alley. Harry Payne Whitney owes third place to the combined endeavors of a number of his young horses, with Bunting his leading contributor. E. R. Bracik-y was fortunate enough to capture one Cf the two halves of the Pimlico Futurity with his capital filly Blossom Time and this landed him in fifth place with slightly less to his credit than fell to the Greentree Stable. This stable found Maryland racing agreeably profitable, in token whereof it finished fourth in the list. The Quincy Stable usually does well in Maryland racing and kept up its custom to practical effe :t in finishing sixth. Glen Riddle Stock Farm achieved its best returns of the year in Maryland fall racing through the excellent form of its high-class colt Oceanic. J. K. L. Ross did not figure as importantly as in preious years, but his stable won enough to put him among the lirst ten in the owners list. Other owners who have .solid reasons for viewing Maryland racing with a high measure of appreciation are: J. S. Cosden, G. C. and C. P. Winfrey, Lexington Stable and Montfort Jones, all of whom won more than 0,000. That the Maryland money was well distributed is illustrated by the fact that twenty-five owners won in excess of 0,000. Marinclli found himself in the Maryland fall racing and in riding with skill and effectiveness landed second to Lang and with a better percentage. E. Smallwood also rode in promising fashion and finished in third pla.ee. Among those who rede considerably F. Kcogh and E. Sonde achieved the best percentages, but neither had as many as a hundred mounts. James Butwcll rode in his average form and lasts well in the saddle. L. Morris and H. Thomas were successful enough to hold out promise of better things in the future.
