DUETTISTE RUNS UNPLACED LONDON England January 2 Joseph E Wideners Duettiste making his first start since he went wrong while training for the Grand National last winter finished un ¬ placed under a weight assignment of 170 pounds in the Victory Steeplechase of 5000 at Manchester today The race was won by V T Thompsons Habton a sevenyearold mare by Sandbw Bulmer carrying 175 pounds She was ridden by Morgan G P Sandays Hairpin II was second secondDuettiste Duettiste has been training under Escott at Lewes for some time and he had pro ¬ gressed sufficiently in his preparations to justify starting him the trainer thought Escott rode him today He did not show enough speed to threaten anything in the race however and was not persevered with when it became apparent that he was beaten The Widener jumper was third choice in the wagering at C to 1 Habton carrying 175 pounds led all the way and won easily by eight lengths Hairpin II which finished second also carried 175 pounds Among the others which started were Blaz ¬ ing Corn and Morganatic Marriage
