Here and There on the Turf Hildreths Star Jockeys Safe Arrival of English EnglishHorses Horses Owner Salmons Breeding BreedingEnterprises Enterprises How often one hears the expression that this or that jockey is the best horse in the stable It is frequently the case the rider is of more racing value than the horses There have been stables that by reason of the handicap suffered by having bad riders never reach the prominence the horses de ¬ serve The man who holds the contract on a champion rider has a racing asset that is the equal of any horse as a business proposi ¬ tion The sportsman who has a good string of horses but no rider is at more of a dis ¬ advantage that he who has an ordinary string and a champion of the saddle Then how much better equipped must be he who has a string of champion horses as well as two champion riders That is just where the Rancocas Stable stands for 1923 By the signing of little Lawrence Marion Fator the lad who by riding three winners on ths last day of 1922 beat Chick Lang to head the jockey list Sam Hildreth obtained the leading jockej in number of winning mounts while he al ¬ ready had the contract on the rider who enjoys the best percentage of winning mounts in Earl Sande 4 U USandc Sandc stood out alone as far as percentage is concerned with his record of 32 against 22 for young Fator The difference was in fhe number of winning mounts and the num ¬ ber of opportunities Fator had 855 mounts during the racing season of which he won 187 while Sande with only 386 mounts was first in 122 of his races But the Fator record was considerably better than that of Chick Lang who led him to the last day of 1922 for the Cosden lightweight rode in 957 races 102 more than the littla fellow that nosed him out and of his total 185 were winning mounts Thus it will bs seen that there are two ways of figuring the excellence of the jockey both the greatest number of winning mounts and the best percentage Hildrcth has the leader both ways The count goss for the Rancocas Stable this year yearIt It is cause for congratulation that young Fator is to ride over the New York tracks He will doubtless make good adequately in the best company for in his climb to the top cf the ladder he has hooked up with some of the good ones and proved his skill skillThe The safe arrival of the Mesaba with many foreign thoroughbreds on board was probably a big thing for the American turf and thor ¬ oughbred industry Thirtynine of these were consigned to American sportsmen and breeders The importation was chiefly of interest and value in the matrons of the shipment as well as the fillies that are destined to become American matrons They included daughters of Spearmint Roi Herode Black Jester Storn oway Picton Fowlingpiece The White Knight and other notable stallions whose daughters are doing well in the stud in Eng ¬ land All of these mares have the best blood of the English Stud Book in their veins It is a notable fact that Walter J Salmon the New York sportsman and breeder who was a considerable purchaser at the December sales did not send his mares over with the shipment They were left in England and this is evidence that Mr Salmon proposes to widen his racing and breeding activities Mr Salmon made notable purchases at the De ¬ cember sales and with the mares obtained he has the nucleus for his English breeding operations His most notable purchase was that of Princess Sterling daughter of Florizel H Sterling Balm by Friars Balsam and the dam of St Louis winner of the Two Thousand Guineas of last year This mare is in foal to Bachelors Double Others of the English purchases were Brig of Ayr a daughter of Ayrshire and Santa Brigaida by St Simon and Zefa a daughter of Onnc and Ornament by Bend Or This last named mare is in foal to Swynford One other mare makes up the stable that Mr Salmon has in England He has begun his English breeding venture in a manner that should bring him the success he is seeking abroad No sportsman of th ° American turf has shown a keener interest in breeding than has Mr Salmon and whils he is a comparatively recent recruit to the ranks of the breeders the produce of his mares take a front place in racing racingHe He has made a careful study of blood lines and has purchased with discrimination His present plan is not to become wedded to any one sire confining his attention to the mares One of recent notable purchases was of the mare Panoply from Harry Payne Whitney This mare is a daughter of Peter Pan and that sterling brood mare Inaugural the dam of such good ones as Whiskaway Flags and Crocus Panoply herself was a highclass mare and is in foal to Broomstick BroomstickOther Other mares in Salmons list are Retrieve Diversion Butterflies H Lady Brighton Greenery Adrienne American Beauty Cicuta Fair Lady Impetueuse Lydia Languish Man ¬ tilla Steplightly Superwoman Toddle Snow Capt Rosedrop and Biplane BiplaneAn An idea of the Salmon method of breeding is shown when for these marcs he has employed sixteen different stallions each one of the sturdiest blood heritage
