MARVELOUS TIJUANA FINISH New Years Handicap Furnishes Many Thrills for Big Crowd Tailor Maid Supercargo Adonis and Rebnfce RebnfceSeparated Separated by Inches at End of Most MostSensational Sensational Race Seen at Course SAN DIEGO Cal January 2 Four thoroughbreds speeding through the stretch on even terms continuing onward to the fin ¬ ish under a terrific drive while thousands looked on admiringly tells the story of the decision of the 2000 New Years Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth sixteenthFour Four noses at the winning line and the packed Tijuana racing plant in a quandary regarding the winner until the official num ¬ bers were displayed justified the high realms of excitement which prevailed and by a margin of inches that stouthearted mare Tailor Maid with jockey E Fator in the saddle was the winner with nostrils almost touching came Supercargo Adonis and Re ¬ buke next in order only the smallest mar ¬ gins separating them What a sight to be ¬ hold It was thrilling enough to make old and young shriek at the top of their voices Thunderous applause greeted the quartet as they jogged back to weigh out Much of it was for the victress but the other three by virtue of their courageous battle were heroes even in defeat It was indeed a finish long to be remembered rememberedREBUKE REBUKE MAKES DEBUT DEBUTThe The New Tears Handicap marked the de ¬ but here of the good horse Rebuke owned by Commander J 1C L Ross and on the strength of his fast trials this compact son of Dick Finnell was installed the favorite Rebuke looked a picture of animation as he paraded postward his coal black coat shin ¬ ing in the rays of the sun like polished ebony Behind him came Tailor Maid win ¬ ner of the Christmas Handicap Adonis Su ¬ percargo and the Irwin hopes Prince Direct and Black Betty BettyThe The start was slightly delayed by Super ¬ cargo which persisted in shuffling over to the outside He was acting in this manner when the barrier sprung and in conse ¬ quence his beginning was not to his advant ¬ age Rebuke cut out the running and the black charger showed the way to the others around the first turn Tailor Maid quickly got a good position and while racing down the back stretch it was discernible that Fator had the mare under restraint restraintRounding Rounding the far turn there was a general closing up of the field and when they swung into the stretch it was Rebuke and Tailor Maid whicli led the others On the outside came Adonis while closest to the inner rail Supercargo moved up urged by the deter ¬ mined riding of jockey E Taplin A six ¬ teenth out it was anybodys race It was then the jockeys sat down to ride and ride they did as if their lives were at stake With nostrils blood red manes fiying necks stretched to the utmost whips cracking and amidst the roar of the multitudes Tailor Maid in one supreme effort got her nose in front The wise men of the official stand opined that Supercargo was second and Adonis third Thus ended the most spec ¬ tacular finish ever witnessed at Tijuana Rebukes race was a corking one He was giving weight to every horse in the race with the exception of Black Betty which probably belonged elsewhere He set all the pace and hung on in the final drive with the tenacity of a bulldog Surely it would seem that the race will do him good and perhaps in his next appearance if he meets Tailor Maid he may reverse yesterdays verdict verdictTijuana Tijuana entertained another monster crowd which was augmented by many Los Angeles fans who came here on the special train which left the neighborly city in the morning It would be hard to imagine a more ideal day for the sport of racing a Continued on twelfth pace MARVELOUS TIJUANA FINISH Continued from first page warm sun shining out
