Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 8 1903 Jockeys Walker and Steele each rode a pair of winners at the outlaw meeting at Newport NewportW W McDaniels trainer for the rich brewer W Gerst has his hands full training a big string at Cumberland Park He has about thirty two and threeyearolds stabled there Jockey Redfern W C Whitneys stable rider is in good form at New Orleans Today he rode two winners and two seconds He came close to making it three wins for the day in the second race but jockey Fuller him ¬ self a good rider saved his mount in the early running and had enough speed left in reserve to get home a winner by a head Had the finish line been ten feet farther Redferna mount would have won Little jockey Robbins is now going around New Orleans with his arm out of the sling that he has bean wearing since he suffered a fracture some time ago Im getting along fine said Robbins and expect to be riding again next week Robbins is a cleancut in ¬ telligent wellmannered boy He is strong for his age and weight a fearless rider and he will make a good jockey in time In fact he can hold his own with most of the boys riding at the Crescent City CityInventor Inventor the fouryearold chestnut colt by Ingoldsby Duchess Caroline which was nosed out by AllanaDale for the last Ken ¬ tucky Derby has bean sold by Thomas W Moore to Frank Van Meter The price was given as J5500 Inventor had but one race last year A few days after the Derby trainer John Rodegap found that he was in bad con ¬ dition with a fever and he was taken to Lex ¬ ington from Churchill Downs and put on the shelf He has completely recovered I Tom Welsh who trains the horses that race in the name of mayor Fleishman of Cincinnati I arrived home after a short visit to his native parish in Ireland Three months ago Mr Welsh thought he never could get back to Ireland eoon enough or have the privilege of staying there long enough but once there he soon discovered that places in the new world i had charms which were undreamed of in con ¬ templating the old world Therefore it is that his host of friends find him back in New I York although they had not expected the pleasure of greeting him until well along in I the year Before leaving the other side Mr Welsh bought from H Eugene Leigh seven J Englishbred yearlings These young horses will be shipped to this country shortly and will be prepared for this years racing
