MUD COLD AND GLOOM Were Leading Features at New Orleans Yesterday Consistent Rama Records Another Victory Owner Arthur in Clo ¬ ver With Two Races Won NEW ORLEANS La January 24 The consistent Rama which won yesterday came right back this afternoon and accounted for the feature race winning with consummate ease and as his rider pleased from Macbeth and Knight of the Heather It marked the fifth victory added to Ramas score since his advent in these parts and but for poor racing luck it would have been a perfect record for on the occasion of his only two other races in which he finished second he was beaten by a narrow margin and inter ¬ ference played a dominating part in his defeats defeatsIn In todays race the uncertain Richelieu ridden by the inexperienced Roehm was an outstanding favorite but he proved a dismal failure He probably would have done much better under a good rider Roehm had him in the worst part of the track all through the last threeeighths and he was exhausted in consequence Wintry consequenceWintry weather was still present here and there was a difficult track to race over most of the contention being furnished by the more sturdilybuilt mudrunners Those with an outer post position figured extensively in the results the outer part of the track being firmer than the inner portion portionJames James Arthur figured prominently in the afternoons proceedings and representatives from his stable scored a double their vic ¬ tories coming in succession in the second and third races Alva was his initial winner and Sagamore completed the double The latter was a favorite and raced away from his opponents in decisive style Alva how ¬ ever had to stand a hard drive to get home in advance of Flibbertygibbet Both were ridden by Abel the stable jockey jockeyBEST BEST FINISH OF DAY DAYThe The best finish came in the first race in which twoyearolds furnished the contest It resulted in a hard duel between Lee Adrin and Midnight Follies the Fizer representa ¬ tive just managing to outstay the Worthing ton filly to win by a nose noseFavorite Favorite backers again had a rough road to traverse for choices were again in eclipse Their downfalls began with the opener when Midnight Follies was beaten and in succession came failures of Promising Tom Richelieu Escarpolette Rapid Stride and Austral The only choice to succeed was Sagamore SagamoreThe The chief disappointments were Richelieu and Austral The latter was backed to the exclusion of everything in the race but he was given a bad ride by the incompetent J Ponce and was badly beaten from the start Dr Rae going in his best form won this mile and a half dash with ease easeLittle Little Ammie won the sixth easily from Miracle Man and Ballotcar the trio driving hard through the last eighth The spectators were treated to a kicking duel between Miracle Man Ballotcar and Serbian while the horses were at the post postSerbian Serbian seemed to be the target of the other two and on several occasions they land ¬ ed simultaneously on him Once Serbian caught them off guard and landed heavily on his adversaries before they could scamper out of his way The field was at the post for ten minutes on account of the unruli ness of the starters before they were dis ¬ patched on their journey journeyHARRINGTONS HARRINGTONS FOOB RIDING RIDINGJockey Jockey Harringtons poor riding of Escar ¬ polette came in for a good deal of criticism in the fifth race won by Amaze with Kirah and Huonec dividing the minor portions of the purse Escarpolette was a fastreceding favorite and the betting barometer fore ¬ shadowed her bad race raceGeorge George Cochran who had his license re ¬ voked last year at Mexico City was re ¬ stored to good standing this morning by Messrs Murphy and Conkling who served as stewards during that meeting meetingC C W Hay returned to his duties in the stewards stand today having gone to Frank ¬ fort Ky to attend the funeral of Colonel E H Taylor TaylorW W II Pearce who is serving as secretary of the Huntington W Va racing was an ar ¬ rival today He stated that a sixteen days meeting at Huntington is in contemplation beginning May 1C There will be a 5000 Derby run there thereTodays Todays visitors Included Hon J E Robi doux vicepresident of the Blue Bonnet track at Montreal Canada CanadaA A G Blakely has planned to ship his string of fourteen racers to Tijuana about February 14 14The The colts Stonearabia and Somerby will be gelded and fired for ankle trouble Aunt Jane is another that will undergo the firing process processJockey Jockey Merimee has been given permission by the stewards to accept mounts for others than his contract employer He was re ¬ stricted at Jefferson Park to ride for his own stable only onlyFortysix Fortysix layers responded to the call this afternoon and will be on for two Jays
