TIJUANAS LADIES DAY Goodly Crowd Present Despite the Threatening Weather HeavilyBacked Knighthood in a Popular Victory Nose De ¬ cisions Bring Thrills SAN DIEGO Cal January 24 After a day of rest San Diego and its visitors turned to the Tijuana track this afternoon where the next six days period of racing was ush ¬ ered in under threatening skies While over ¬ cast conditions presaged rain and had somo effect in deterring some from the pilgrimage across the border the crowd was up to stand ¬ ard It was Ladies Day Although it appeared that the weather man was certain to score with his prediction of rain a gentle breeze from the southland upset his predic ¬ tions and the program was raced off without a drop of precipitation The slight rain of last night slowed the track a trifle there being only enough to lay the dust dustQuite Quite a fast band of sprinters paraded to the post in the afternoons feature the sixth race a dash of threequarters An inrush of money made Knighthood the favorite at 4 to 5 in the books at post time this son of Theo Cook together with Coca Cola each being quoted at 2 to 1 when the prices were first displayed This move was couched in wis ¬ dom for Knighthood soon disposed of Settle and holding Coca Cola safe throughout the last sixteenth he carried the colors of A C Bostwick to victory by the margin of a length This same advantage was held by Coca Cola over Doctor Corbett for second place Settle finished fourth Doctor Cor ¬ bett coming with his usual rush near the close to get third money Those who had wagered in the books on Knighthood at 2 to 1 profited quite well for he was given so much favoritism that his price in the mu tuels was only 4 to 5 The victory of Knight ¬ hood cost the books dearly for there was much money for the winner and also quite a flurry to get down on Coca Cola at 4 to 5 for second place Considering that the track was not as fast as Sunday the time of the race l12Vs was quite good goodFORM FORM WELL OBSERVED OBSERVEDForm Form was well observed during the aft ¬ ernoon there being only one longpriced horse that was able to gain brackets This was the threeyearold filly Tule which car ¬ ried the gold and silver colors of the Nevada Stock Farm of which George Wingfield is the master to victory in the seventh race at five and a half furlongs This daughter of Atheling II and Whims had but 92 pounds on her back and entirely overlooked by the speculators she won with little difficulty from Phrone Ward and Florence Deen Tulo allowed Phrone Ward to show the way until well into the stretch where she rushed past the Irwin mare to win by a length and a half The filly paid the attractive price of better than 28 to 1 and the lucky few that placed their faith in her ability to win gave vent to loud cheers when the odds were dis ¬ played playedNorfield Norfield proved the best of a large band of maiden threeyearolds in the opener and won by a wide margin from Norford Honey and the favorite Queencup II IILewis Lewis B which ruled a lukewarm favorite in the second at threequarters had his troubles in scoring from W C Dooly The latter was undeniably the best but off to a flat start made up a world of ground only to miss the mark by a short head It ap ¬ peared as if View would take the third in a canter for after leading by two lengths he entered the stretch with jockey Thompson having him under restraint Then to the dismay of his backers he tired suddenly with victory almost within his grasp and Sheku coming with a great rush nipped him by a nose in the last stride strideAnother Another ncse decision marked the result of the third race at fiveeighths in which Due 1 Guise scored a lucky win over Nog The latter looked all over a winner just before reaching the goal but tired and lost to his rival by the narrowest of margins marginsA A reusing finish on the part of jockey W Martin landed She Devil a winner by a neck in the mile and seventy yards race The mare led her opponents throughout but Martin was forced to ride her hard to withstand the belated challenge of My Rose and Irosity which finished right at her throat latch In this race Ring Rose and Charley Boy were extensively supported but both failed dismally in their tasks Ring Rose showed speed but Charley Boy seemed unablfi to raise a respectable gallop gallopFireworth Fireworth from the William Walker sta ¬ ble only had to slightly extend himself in the mile and a quarter race to take th3 lead Once in front he simply cantered home a winner by three lengths from York Lassie and Little Dear DearMessrs Messrs Quinlan and Heigle represented by Vanessa Welles took the mare Florence Deen out of the seventh race via the claim ¬ ing route The consideration was 1400
