BROCKLESBY ALL THE WAY Again Surprises and Scores Easyj Triumph in Havana Feature Defeats Sea Prince and Erica IVithont Trou ¬ ble Le Balafre and Col Chile Victors In Thrilling Finishes HAVANA Cuba January 24 The Em ¬ press of Britain Handicap named in honor of the English warship in the Havana harbor was offered as the premier racing attraction of the afternoon at Oriental Park The field was small only four facing the starter they being Sea Prince Erica Sun Brae and Brocklesby BrocklesbyThe The threeyearold Erica a son of Vulcain Dinawick which won his two previous races here in a fashion that stamped him as a formidable contender in any company was backed into favoritism displacing Sea Prince at post time timeHowever However the public failed to give Brock elsby due consideration after his last good race in which he was victorious and were astonished to see the son of Wrack take the lead at the start and win all the way He was never seriously menaced and had plenty left at the end to finish two lengths in advance of Sea Prince with Erica third thirdSea Sea Prince raced in last position until en ¬ tering the homestretch where he made up ground rapidly too late however to catch the flying leader Erica challenged gamely at the head of the stretch but went wide and tired Sun Brae stumbled in the back stretch after being straightened out and quit in the last quarter quarter3IALLOW3IOT 3IALLOW3IOT TRIUMPHANT TRIUMPHANTA A sparkling finish marked the end of the mile and a sixteenth of the fifth race in in which Le Balafre got up in the last stride to get the judges eye for a nose decision over Colossus The latter showed plenty of early speed in pacemaking but tired in the last sixteenth sixteenthA A mile race wound up the afternoons program the favorite Mallowmot triumphing after a spirited stretch battle with the pace ¬ maker Stonewall the latter tiring badly at the last sixteenth after setting the pace from the start startChopsticks Chopsticks and Yakima racing as the W R Coe entry enjoyed the favoritism of the public in the opening dash but failed to re ¬ ward their backers the winner turning up in Williams Bros Quash The latter ran a sparkling race After following the pace ¬ maker closely to the eighth post he moved up fast and taking the lead drew away in the last sixteenth to win by three lengths Chopsticks was second a length in front of the Cubanbred Guajiro which tired badly at the end after setting the early pace paceA A fast band of sprinters met in the second race and a thrilling finish resulted O L Foster furnished the winner in Col Chile which beat Salvo by a nose with The Boy in third place The latter set a dazzling early pace and appeared to have the race at his mercy However when Col Chile challenged in the last sixteenth the pace ¬ maker tired and gave way leaving Col Chile and Salvo to fight it out Salvo lost ground at the head of the stretch but recovered quickly and was gaining en Col Chile with every stride just failing to get up and losing by the smallest of margins marginsThe The mile and fifty yards of the third race gave Win or Quit that races for O B Potts an easily achieved success The McGee geld ¬ ing was an evenmoney favorite and never left the result in doubt leading throughout and after opening up a gap of six lengths entering the homestretch he was eased up at the end Thos F McMahon was second just as easily while Ashlin was third
