CHICAGO RACING SITUATION Judge Murphy and Committee Discuss the Question Report to Be Made to Parent Body and andPlans Plans Perfected to Check Multiplicity Multiplicityof of Tracks Here and In St Louis NEW ORLEANS La January 26 At a conference held yesterday between Joseph A Murphy and C Bruce Head L J Carey and Will Woodward the local committee of the Thoroughbred Horse Association the question of the reestablishment of racing in Chicago and St Louis was thoroughly dis ¬ cussed cussedJudge Judge Murphy laid the situation and his position plainly before the committee Both cities were ready for highclass racing Pub ¬ lic sentiment had been brought to a point where if assurances could be had that the sport would be conducted on absolutely clean lines both moral and financial support could be had for the aslcing If however indis ¬ criminate and irresponsible promotion was permitted to run rampant the situation in both cities would be lost Judge Murphy stated further that if in the opinion of the better class of western breeders and horse ¬ men he was the proper person to lead the movement in the sister cities he would devote all of his spare time to the work If in the judgment of the horsemen some one was better fitted for the work he would step aside If in the judgment of the horse ¬ men he was the proper person to lead he would expect the united support of all in checking undesirable promotions and hearty cooperation in keeping the racing absolutely above reproach reproachThe The committee members notified judge Murphy that while they were not qualified to speak for the parent body or for the breeders the prospect of racing in Chicago and St Louis hud been widely discussed by horsemen wintering here and that it was practically the unanimous opinion of them that he was the proper person to lead They further said that they would at once notify the directors of the Thoroughbred j Horse Association and through them the breeders of Kentucky of their own views and the sentiment of the horsemen wintering here and recommend that during the Lex ¬ ington meeting in April horsemen and breed ¬ ers be invited to meet judge Murphy and plans be perfected to cluck a multiplicity of tracks in the two cities citiesActing Acting on this assurance judge Murphy announced that when the Jefferson meeting was under way he would ask the manage ¬ ment to release him for a few days flying trip to Chicago to meet the committee on finance of prominent Chicago men already formed and lay plans for the erection of a race track that will be one of the show places of the country and where a great Derby can be run
