Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 27 1903 I Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land Four out of six favorites won at New Orleans Jockeys Reed and Walker scored doubles during the afternoon Reed riding at Oak ¬ land rode the winners of the last two races Doreen and Ball Room Belle Walker who is riding at Newport piloted William F H and Waiter to victory Mrs S C Hildreth furnished the winner of the feature race at New Orleans It was the third race on the program and the distance was one and one quarter miles Six horses answered the bugle call and the Hildreth horse was installed as the favorite Potheen justi ¬ fied the confidence placed in him by winning with two lengths to spare Jockey Buchanan rode sphndidly in this race Turfmen will glance with more than passing interest at the weights for the Brighton Han ¬ dicap of 1903 if for no other reason than that the best horses in the country are en ¬ gaged in the Brighton and the allotment made by handicapper Vosburgh foreshadows his esti ¬ mate of the relative abilities of the horses of the country and also indicates what his allot ¬ ments for the Suburban and Brooklyn Handi ¬ caps which precede the running of the Bright ¬ on will be Gold Heels which won this event last year as well as the Suburban Han ¬ dicap again receives the post honor but this time he is coupled with Hermis at the head of the list Hermis was pronounced the best eastern threeyearold of last year Advance Guard the iron horse the hero of many gal ¬ lant struggles on the turf is next on the list with 124 pounds while the erratic Blues gets off with two pounds less Of the threeyear olds Irish Lad is rated best by the handicap ¬ per Ha receives 106 pounds four pounds more than Grey Friar the conqueror of Ace ful fulTo To people who keep track of horses in win ¬ ter quarters no place where the thoroughbreds are congregated in force is more interesting than Nashville At this place many of the strongest stables in the West are located the big Drake establishment being especially promi ¬ nent Its four American Derby candidates Savabie Von Rousse High Chancellor and Orly are reported to be in rugged health and have developed into grand appearing three yearolds Other American Derby horses lo ¬ cated here are to be seen on the track each day and sometimes as many as fifteen are on the course at once Never before in the his ¬ tory of the turf has there been so many grand looking threeyearolds located at any one track Bardolph Sinner Simon and Lem Reed are the equines that Gorman and Bauer place then dependence in for the big race The former is the brightest possibility This colt was purchased by Mr Gorman from John Smith last fall He is by Mithful Bermuda Dance a Bermuda mare of splendid individual ¬ ity and choice breeding Other horses well liked are J Sidney Walker Fore and Aft Har dign and Postmaster Wright
