VISITORS GATHERING Approach of Mardi Gras Increas ¬ ing Fair Grounds Crowds Most Brilliant Racing of the Meet ¬ ing Expected in the Two Closing Weeks NEV ORLEANS La January 2S The j Fair Grounds is rapidly approaching the height of the meeting for during the next week most of the visitors who come from afar are expected to reach here attracted by the famous Mardi Gras The racing because of these numerous additions to the already extensive visiting list will be benefitted in patronage patronageOnly Only fourteen days remain of the Fair Grounds racing and secretary McLennan is bending every effort to arrange racing pro ¬ grams that will be in keeping with the im ¬ proved conditions conditionsDuring During the earlier part of the past week j inclement weather ruled a tinge of winter j weather visiting these parts for the first time It only lasted three days and Satur ¬ day was marked by the best racing of the present meeting meetingThe The racing at the Fair Grounds continues to nieet with popular favor and an outstand ¬ ing factor is the lack of criticism Even those heretofore expressing pronounced hos ¬ tility to the sport are astonishingly inactive and tacitly admit approval by their silence It is not unusual to see in the daily attend ¬ ance at the course persons who fought hard for the abolishment of racing Their change of front is due to the fact that the officials j are bending every effort to regulate the racing in strict style and with a view to gaining the publics confidence In this I horsemen are cooperating heartily That I there have been form reversals goes without saying But they were not due to machina ¬ tions Horses and jockeys have their good and bad periods particularly when there is an abundance of the poorer class of both and j the few form somersaults can rightly be charged to natural racing routine routineJEFFERSON JEFFERSON PARK PLANS PLANSThe The Jefferson Park management continues with its plans for the resumption of the rac ¬ ing at the Shrewsbury track Following the close of the Fair Grounds it intends to begin its spring meeting February 14 and run for j twentyeight days terminating on March 17 witli the 10000 Louisiana Derby DerbySome Some opposition to racing in Lent has de ¬ veloped The opponents hold it would have a bad effect to race during the lenten period in this pronounced catholic community Some i also contend that a racing season of the j twentyeight additional days at Jefferson Park would be too much racing here j The Fair Grounds directorate presided j over by the president and general manager John Dymond Jr gave a banquet last night to the officials of the track and several rep j resentatives of the press the occasion being a sort of gettogether affair in which officials and the directors had their first opportunity j to discuss racing Constructive ideas were j advanced by officials as well as directors The officials particularly stressed their i thanks to the general manager and directors for their noninterference with the racing officials and for their support in upholding rulings handed down An outstanding fea 1 i ture brought out at the gathering was that j the track is out of politics No political sine ¬ cures have been handed out none will be j under the present regime regimeSIX SIX CAUIOADS FOR TIJTAXA TIJTAXATijuana Tijuana is making an extensive bid for some of the horsemen here and probably a j i halfdozen carloads of racers will depart for I the Ixwer California track at the close of the Fair Grounds racing It will embrace some of the better class ones here who will try for the rich stakes that still have their defision to come at the Coffroth track trackAccording According to those well informed in Ken ¬ tucky affairs either Hamilton or Snyder will be chosen successor to the late starter A B Dade It is said that nearly every starter of prominence has made application for the position The stake blanks lor Kentucky races are being awaited with eagerness and they will be sure of ready attention from the horsemen here j
