KENTUCKY DERBY OF 1923 Expect Record Entry List When Stake Closes February 24 Plans Under AVay to Increase Accommoda ¬ tions so That 73000 People May See Famous Race LOUISVILLE Ky January 28 Although the entries for the Kentucky Derby to be run at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 19 do not close until February 21 already there is keen public interest in the race and the Kentucky Jockey Club officials are be ¬ sieged with inquiries and the local hotels have appeals for reserve accommodations from all over America It is apparent from a review of the probable entries which will evidently exceed 100 that the field for the coming Derby will be one of the most closely matched in the history of this event and that a stirring contest is assured between the stars of the threeyearold division There will be no outstanding favorite as was true in the case of the sensational Morvich last year the premier honors of 1922 having been I shared by at least a dozen twoyearolds winners of the various rich stakes East and West This uncertainty warrants the opin ¬ ion that the 50000 added stake will be eagerly sought by owners insuring a large field and increasing the approval with which this absorbing turf event is always ac ¬ claimed claimedGeneral General manager M J AVinn has ordered a beautiful and costly solid gold souvenir to be given the owner of the Derby winner Under his direction the architects have transformed the clubhouse adding 100 boxes building a pagoda of unique design extend ¬ ing the lawn and improving it with terraces increasing the space until 5000 additional visitors can find seats beneath the shade trees the approaches to the clubhouse filled with flowers and plants until the beauty of the Saratoga course is rivaled if not excelled Churchill Downs this spring will be ready to extend a hospitable welcome to the 75000 vis ¬ itors that make Derby day the sporting holi ¬ day of the nation
