BIG WEEKDAY CROWD Fine Attendance at Oriental Park and Speculation Is Large Salvo Scores Initial Triumph of ofMeeting Meeting Taking Measure of ofMallowmot Mallowmot HAVANA Cuba February 16 Todays at ¬ tendance at Oriental Park was one of the largest for a week day here this winter The speculation was exceedingly brisk and thc layers had the best of it The Ulster and Tno II Roche being the only winning favor ¬ ites itesSalvo Salvo the Canadianbred which formerly raced under the colors of George M Hendrie scored his first victory here when he beat Mallowmot by half a length in a driving fin ¬ ish Salvo was ridden by H Kaiser and worked his way up on the outside and out ¬ lasted Mallowmot at the end Herron fin ¬ ished third beaten by a head for second place and ran much the best race of the field De Bonero the favorite ran a disappointing race raceE E Cebrians Lotta Speed after proving a disappointment on several occasions finally made good when she won the opening race The victory came after a long hard stretch drive in which she lasted long enough to heat Bantam by a nose The latter was out run in the early stages but slipped through next to the inner rail and at the end was overhauling the leader leaderIsosceles Isosceles was a heavily supported horse by his connections in the second but was beaten a length by Queecreek Isosceles began rather slowly moved up on the outside round ¬ ing the far turn and when entering the home ¬ stretch he looked as if he would draw away When the final test came however he tired and Quecreek shook him off in the last six ¬ teenth winning going away away3IISS 3IISS CALTIIA A SUliriUSE SUliriUSEMiss Miss Caltha proved a surprise in the third race which she won in runaway fashion by a three lengths margin from San Diego which in turn just did last long enough to beat Mary Rcigel by a head The latter after starting slowly finished fast on the outside Milner was unable to get Tom Nor ris to extend himself and he never was prom ¬ inent Spods was heavily backed but quit in the last eighth eighthThe The Ulster proved an easy winner in the fourth Groos got him in a pocket in the backstretch but he got clear rounding the far turn and went to the front with a rush and in the final eighth was under restraint Polite was messed about at the finish being on the inside in close quarters and was un ¬ able to squeeze through throughThe The stewards were of the opinion that Burns rode Groos close in the last eighth of the last race on Thursday and issued a ruling suspending him for live days daysA A Simmer in whose colors Quecreek runs was fined 50 for not properly schooling Quecreek with blinkers and running him with that equipment in the fifth race yes ¬ terday without permission from the stewards stewardsWinnipeg Winnipeg was claimed from the sixth race yesterday by S Miodow for 1000 Secretary Thomas E Bourke of the Illinois Jockey Club accompanied by Sam Rifus the wellknown restaurant owner of Chicago after a stay of several days at New Orleans arrived in Havana today During his stay in Havana Mr Eourke will confer with rac ¬ ing secretary Martin Nathanson and try to induce him to accept the position of racing secretary at Hawthorne HawthorneMr Mr Winrow Ferguson and Mr F J Shan ley of New York arrived for a brief visit and are being entertained by Henry Wendt WendtIt It was announced today that the first horse special following the close of the Ori ¬ ental Park meeting will leave Havana Mon ¬ day morning March 26 carrying the horses consigned to Kentucky Huntington W Va and Omaha Neb The second special will leave on Tuesday March 27 for New York Maryland and Ohio points pointsTony Tony Wallace the assistant racing secre ¬ tary of Oriental Park leaves Saturday morn ¬ ing for his home in Lexington Ky to be at the bedside of his aged mother whose death is expected momentarily This is the second time this winter that Mr Wallace has been called home on account of the illness of his mother motherThree Three horses will be shipped by J Chao to Porto Rico on Saturday They will go in charge of J Lorez who will also take along the horses Buford and Douglas Fair ¬ banks Jockey T Williams will also go along to ride rideRedmon Redmon was claimed out of the second race Thursday by L Louder for 900 900Among Among todays visitors were Francis Purke the wellknown saddler of New York and J S Whatley who is racing a string of horses here Mr Burke was accompanied by his wife They are guests at the Alman darea
