Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February 17 1903 The horses of W L Lansing including Henry McDaniel will hereafter run in the name of Lansings father R G Lansing Lansing has sold Brannigan to a Memphis turfman Dan OBrien has purchased of Edward Frazer of Lexington Ky for a private price around 3500 the threeyearold chestnut colt Longino by Longflight Fannie W Fonso by Fonso The colt was raced by J C Milam last year yearThe The recent experiment of the track superin ¬ tendent at the New Orleans Fair Grounds in running an asphalt burner over bad holes in the going is likely to prove successful A deep spot at the finish was so treated with the result that it was almost as hard as macadam Tod Sloan may ride for Mrs Langtry in this country this year if he succ3eds in his efforts to secure a pardon from the English Jockey Club It is reported that just before she left for America Mrs Langtry made him a hand ¬ some offer to ride for her in America and this has encouraged him to urge his appeal to the Jockey Club with additional energy Mrs Langtry was the first patron of racing to predict a successful career in England for Sloan and she has always felt that he had been harshly treated by the Jockey Club authorities It is understood that Arthur Rcdfern who will ride for W C Whitney this year will ride no more at New Orleans but will go East as soon as he entirely recovers from his injuries sustained at the Crescent City last week Redfern has too valuable a contract to fulfill with Mr Whitney to take any further chances and his present employers Durnell ITerz cannot hold him longer to the terms of the contract the boy recently signed with them While the jockeys injuries may have something to do with his unexpected departure from New Orleans it is believed that his father who recently had trouble with the stewards is making this move because of personal reasons Redfern has never come so near fatal injury in his career as in last weeks tumble and he is in need of a rest it is said Those who saw the mishap say that it was only through a miracle that the boy was not killed outright outrightMartin Martin Nathanson secretary of the Harlem Jockey Club returned to Chicago today with a big batch of entries for the spring stakes of his associations Mr Nathanson has been for two weeks visiting ths southern breeding farm and training grounds Mr Nathanson said The best two horses I saw in my swing around the circuit were Owenton and Runnels Owenton was not in good condition last year but now in his fouryearold form he is a splendid specimen of the thoroughbred And so of Runnels John A Drake to whom Run ¬ nels belongs has the best looking stable of any of those in winter quarters I never saw so fine a looking bunch A large number of his horses have not been taken up and are running in the paddocks adjacent to Cumber ¬ land Park Some of the number have not even had a brush upon their coats since last fall yet the entire string looks fine Savable Von Rousse and High Chancellor the thres yearolds of the Drake string entered in the American Derby look every inch like Derby horses
