Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 5 1903 Racing at New Orhans and Oakland Mars Cassidy who will do the starting at Benning has arrived at Washington and will prcceed to school various twoyearolds at that track According to M H Tichenor of the firm of Tichenor Company jockey Otto Wonderly has been signed to do the stables riding this year at a salary of 12000 Jockey Buchanan recently suspended at New Orleans spent Sun ¬ day at Memphis and was released from his contract with Tichenor Buchanan left for New Orleans in hopes of securing reinstate J W Schorrs Crescent City Derby candi ¬ date Spencer Reif may not be sent to New Orleans to start in the race While exercising on the track last Monday at Memphis the colt ran away and circled the course twice before he was caught The extent of his injuries is unknown now and trainer Walker said that he would not decide for a few days about shipping the colt to New Orleans OrleansW W OB Macdonough the wellknown Cali fornian who bought the celebrated Ormonde has retired completely from racing although j I he will continue in the breeding industry He has notified secretary Fellowes of the Coney Island Jockey Club of the transfer of the threeyearold colt Glen Arvon which is nomi ¬ nated in the Realization to W Fisher also of the sale of Beau Ormonde which is eligible to the Annual Championship to E L Kripp KrippWord Word comes from Nashville that Harry Gerhardy who trained a string of horses for W B Jackson last year has lost his reason and is confined in an insane asylum Ger ¬ hardy was a crack rider in his day and after ¬ ward was a firstclass trainer He was pop ¬ ular with those he came in contact with and numbered his friends by the score A fall received while riding at Guttenberg is said to have been responsible for his present ill The new rule of the Jockey Club requiring that horses shall not only be entered and start in an individual name hereafter but that the name used shall be that of an owner whose interest in the horse in question is as great as that of any other partner and that all partnership must be registered in percentages is revealing many a hitherto jealouslyguarded stable secret The latest of these to come to light is that Terry McGovern is the principal owner of the aggregation of horses he has heretofore been generally supposed to be slightly interested in They will race in his own name and colors this year The noti fication of this fact comes in the official an ¬ nouncement of the entries received for the Carter Handicap which appears in the cur ¬ rent weeks racing calendar Terry McGovern Saturday entered the fouryearold he pur ¬ chased from R W Walden Sons The Carter is the earliest handicap of the year run in the city and state of New York be ¬ ing the star event of the opening day at Aque ¬ duct on April 15 William B Leeds president of the Rock Island Railroad has purchased an interest in a stable of thoroughbreds owned by Andrew Miller one of the stewards of the Jockey Club and will race this year in his own name and colors The details of the partnership are not known as yet but it is said that to pre ¬ serve their individuality Messrs Miller and L Leeds will each race a separate string The partnership and colors claimed by Mr Leeda will be registered with the Jockey Club in a few days It is said that Frank Regan the trainer recently employed by Mr Miller at a salary of 10000 for the year will train for the new firm Mr Leeds will be a welcome acquisition to the turf and will doubtless speedily take rank among the Whitneys Bel monts and other men who are prominent in their efforts to promote and elevate the sport in this country Mr Leeds acquired a for ¬ tune in tin plate and later drifted into the railroad business and later became president of the Rock Island system Andrew Miller is one of the bestknown turfmen in the East He is treasurer of the Saratoga Racing As sociation
