Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 6 1903 Racing at New Orleans and Oakland John E Madden said today The greatest evil of the turf is the abuse of the twoyear old with whip and spur Since the introduc ¬ tion of the barrier there is little delay at the post and this saves the twoyearolds very The two highpriced mares Reckon and Sallie of Navarre which cost S S Brown an outlay of over 22000 are both running together in a paddock at the Oakwood Stud of C F Mc Meekin where they were sent last fall by their owner and where they will remain until bred to the great Bowling Brook this year Both are heavy with foal and if each ToaL a colt Captain Browns cup of joy will be full to overflowing Both great mares are in tha best of health and though they have a warm stable to run in they are out of doors most of the tune Barring old Senorita which will always hold first place in the esteem of Cap ¬ tain Brown he owns no other mares which he thinks as much of as he does of Reckon and Sallie of Navarre NavarreW W Waldo had two winning mounts to his credit when racing was finished for the day at Oakland Pupil and Elfonse were the horses he helped in their rush for victory Particu ¬ larly did he help Elfonse This gelding was off to a poor start and his chances looked hopeless but Waldo rated him along easily gaining a little ground every moment The crowd concentrated their attention on Cho teau and Hipponax fully expecting the winner to be either of these two They came runninj down the stretch like a team but the early pace began to tell Elfonse was in third position and it was only a matter of calling on his mount for Waldo to rush Elfonse to the front and he had enough speed in reserve to outfinish Rose of May and David S Cho teau and Hipponax after racing each other into defeat finished far back backBotany Botany Nigrette Beau Ormonde Dautsch land and Princess Titania went to the post in Oaklands main attraction today a handicap at six and a half furlongs Betting atten ¬ tion was centered on Princess Titania and the mare responded with a great rush of speed in the stretch to beat Deutschland by a head Deutschland cut out the pace from the start with Princess Titania right at his heels and i I jockey Birkenruth sitting tight reserving her for the final dash Deutschlands rider showed poor judgment in keeping him in the heaviest part of the track throughout the race The colt seemed to like the stiff going and was easily best but Kirkenruth on Princess Ti ¬ tania put up a spectacular ride and out finished Wilson Beau Ormonde came from fifth place in the final sixteenth with an amaz ¬ ing display of speed and only failed to land second place by a nose Nigrette after keep ¬ ing pace with the leaders quit badly at ths head of the stretch but finished five lengths ahead of Botany which was never a factor i at any stage of the race
