Here and There on the Turf Record Kentucky Derby En ¬ tries triesAll All With a Chance Named NamedMore More Proposed Betless Rac ¬ ing ingMadden Madden s Beneficial Policy There was further evidence of the present prosperity of the American turf in the re ¬ sponse of the horsemen in entries to the 50000 Kentucky Derby which was closed February 24 A compilation of the returns revealed that there were 145 nominations which sets a new mark for the big race in recent years Closing at this time of the year the nominators have an excellent chance to know their candidates well It is safe to as ¬ sume that no colt or filly was named that was not considered either by public perform ¬ ance last year or private form to measure up to the Derby requirements requirementsIt It was confidently expected that the list would be a big one by reason of the unsettled condition of the race for twoyearold honors in 1922 but the returns cxceded the fondest hopes Aside from the fact that this presages one of the most notable renewals of the fa ¬ mous race the entries tell eloquently of the vast number of potentially highclass three yearolds there are in the country to try for the Derby and other stake races of the year yearProbably Probably all of these are named for the Preakness Stakes the other 50000 race for the threeyearolds that is the offering of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico This race is run May 12 and with the Derby date May 19 it is safe to predict that many of the candidates will try for both races To the Preakness the geldings are not eligible and this fact will bar some of the notable aspirants for the Churchill Downs feature but with the exception of H P Whitneys Enchantment the colts possibly have something on the geldings geldingsTanforan Tanforan is not the only California track that proposes conducting a race meeting that will be betless That is now the announced plan of the new venture at Culver City near Los Angeles AngelesIt It is proposed to start the construction work on the track April 1 and the contemplated opening as an amusement enterprise will be in September For that opening there will be a live stock show and harness racing Then the real thoroughbred racing is to begin on Thanks ¬ giving Day the favorite opening for all of the winter race tracks tracksDoubtless Doubtless these dates will be arranged to fit ii with the racing time at Tanforan and pos ¬ sibly the same horses will be seen at each meeting It is an opening wedge to bring racing back to California where once it flour ¬ ished so bounteously The men who are be ¬ hind the revival arc men who will see to it that there is no reproach in the conduct of the sport sportEventually Eventually there must be a system of wager ¬ ing to have any racing venture continue but if a community wants racing such race meet ¬ ings cannot fail to do a great missionary work in the interests of the turf I John E Madden at the time he sold The Finn for 110000 to W R Coe reiterated his declaration that he intends selling the matrons at Hamburg Place until he has the band re ¬ duced to about thirtyfive With these his plan is to carry on his breeding for his own racing needs needsHis His recent sale of six mares to J S Cos den is right in line with that expressed policy The six that were disposed of were three daughters of Ogden and three daughters of the thedead dead Star Shoot The transfer of these mares I to Virginia enriches the Cosden establishment establishmentabundantly abundantly Other sales that Mr Madden will make before he has completed his new plan will likewise be of great benefit to the industry and the wider circulation of the winning blood bloodof of famous Hamburg Place means much to breeders generally
