Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 23 1903 Racing at Washington Oakland and Little Rock The Coney Island Jockey Club last Monday announced that the entries of the mares Siberia II Quietly and Apology owned by Thomas A Church were void for the Futurity of 1905 owing to the mares not being in foal foalLittle Little Rock celebrated the return of racing with the Capital Hotel Stakes for twoyearolds as the main attraction The starters in this race six were having their initial baptism under fire never having faced the barrier be ¬ fore The despised outsider in the betting Imboden outpaced the others and hung on gamely in the final drive to beat Ascot which began slowly and ran on the outside all the way but tired when the final pinch came Co mora rather than run with horses with such outlandish names such as Hastdugesehen and Sartor Resartus wheeled when the barrier rose and was left Sartor Resartus was well up all the way but tired in the last eighth Hastdugesehen found his name too much of a burden and never figured seriously in the race A tremendous crowd turned out to welcome the thoroughbred back to Washington and the Benning course was taxed to its capacity The weather was not all that could be expected the clouds hovering low and the threatening rain was expected to fall at any moment The track was muddy which explained the numer ¬ ous withdrawals there being thirteen scratched from the Benning Handicap only six horses going to the post for the stake Father Bill Dalys Himself a fiveyearold chestnut horse by Himyar ran a creditable race to take down the major share of the stake Himself showed that in soft going such as prevailed at Ben ning today that it would take a mighty good race horse to beat him at this distance He was much used in wearing Ahumada down in the stretch and was palpably short but this race will improve him greatly Ahumada set the pace to the middle of the stretch with Himself and Honolulu following the rest strung out About midway of ths stretch Himself moved up and gradually wore Ahumada down to win going away Honolulu took the small portion of the stake There were also numer out doubles scored during the day Jockeys Odom and Redfern having two winners and owner Oliver winning two purses with his horses Lord Badge and Alado Redfern rode Lord Badge and Alado also having the mount on Ahumada which was beaten by Himself Odom rode a first time starter in the twoyear old race and won with him This youngster named Race King is a most promising young racer disposed of his opponents with consum mate ease coming from last position to win drawing away
