1 . i FIREBRAND ON PARADE Jefferson Livingstons Star Handicap Horse in Fine Fettle. ♦ ■ Ro McMillan Only Derby Candidate Out for Work Monday — F. J. Kelley Horses En Route From the West. » , LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 2.— "When Jefferson Livingston came to Churchill Downs this morning for the first time this spring to look over his stable he had as his guests Rodolf Yalentino and his wife, who are to appear here tonight at a public dance hall. Trainer Kirby brought out of the Livingston stable the star handicap horse Firebrand and the crack sprinter Buster. He gave instructions to the boys on the racers to let them move along at a lively gait. Firebrand took off in the lead of Buster, but the boy had him under restraint, practically standing up in the stirrups to keep the big horse off the lead. The dockers caught the gallop in 1 :19 for three-quarters and experienced work watchers expressed the belief that Firebrand is in grand condition and not more than a fortnight from a race. He certainly looks a different horse from his appearance last spring when Mr. Livingston bought him from Joe Hawkins for a reported price of 0,000. He even filled out during the winter. His coat is like silk and should the handicapper treat him kindly he will be a hard horse to beat in the rich fixtures to be run at Churchill Downs during the spring meeting. Training operations were practically at a standstill today not only on account of the visit of Valentino to the course, but that most of the Derby candidates received their workouts Sunday. Bo McMillan was the only Derby colt worked, with Stanley Beal on his back. The Ballot colt showed a good gallop, going a mile in 1 :48%, the half in 52% and three-quarters in 1:20%. JOCKEY B. KENNEDY ARRIVES. Jockey B. Kennedy, who is under contract to ride for F. J. Kelley this year, was an arrival at the Downs this morning. He had just returned from Tijuana. He reported that Charles Van Meter, trainer for Mr. Kelley, who has been at the old Tanforan track, near San Francisco, with the Kelley stable the last winter, did not ship his horses ; until last Saturday and that he probably would not arrive at the Downs until next . Friday or Saturday. Mr. Van Meter had intended to ship a week earlier, but weather • conditions made him postpone the trip. He I reports that Skeezix, the Kelley Derby candidate, is in fine condition. Fred Good, who came here from Lexington Saturday, left for Bowie today. Mr. Good was here pricing a few of the Derby eligibles, one of which he has a commission to buy for a Chicago turfman. Former jockey Jack Hanover also was an i arrival from New Orleans. He brought the horses Kennmare and Winner Take All, which, he is training. C. Bruce Head has employed jockey Newton Barrett to do his riding this year. Mr. Head 1 has a dozen likely two-year-olds, the get of f his stallion Master Robert, which he will 1 race this year. Hugh Bed Gilmore has placed a starting-gate in position and will begin tomoirow educating ■ the two-year-olds at the barrier. Marie Miller foaled a dead colt today by T ourtship. E. Fator. contract jockey for the J. S. Ward stable, arrived today from Tijuana 1 track. It also is claimed that Aspiration, the colt 1 recently acquired by Benjamin Block, will 1 not be pointed for the Kentucky Deroy, but *• will probably make his first start in the e latonia Derby. ♦
