TRAINING AT DOWNS Wise Counsellor and Worthmore Sent Three-Quarters. Both Show Up Well Altawood Works Impressively Havana Special Arrives. LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 28. Wise Counsellor and Worthmore, the two crack colts that are being prepared for the Kentucky Derby by J. S. Ward, their owner and trainer, at Churchill Downs, were given the mcst pretentious gallops at that track Friday morning when they were sent three-quarters mile, the greatest distance they have been worked out since their spring training began. The workout watchers caught the quarter in 26, half in 52 1-5, five-eighths in 1 :0G and three-quarters in 1 :19. The two colts were accompanied by Donges and Bear Grass and the quartette, beginning at the three-quarters post, went along in close alignment all the way, with Bear Grass having a slight advantage over Wise Counsellor at the finish. Mr. Ward was well pleased with the work and gave it as his opinion that both of the Derby aspirants will soon be far enough advanced in their training to be sent along a speedy mile. Altawood, the colt that Ham Keene is handling for C. Bruce Head, also made a fine impression when he was sent five-eighths mile, accompanied by Alice Blue Gown and Flowers of Love, in 1 :05 3-5. The Derby eligible kept pace with his older competitors all the way and finished with much in reserve. Mr. Head was on hand to witness the Derby colts latest trial. "Chuck" Walker did not ask much of J." E. Maddens Derby colts Gypsy King, Polo Ground and Check. He merely allowed them to canter around the course preparatory to a good trial scheduled for Saturday morning, when owner Madden is expected to be on hand to view the colts in action. Two carloads of horses, comprising a portion of the seven carloads of the Havana special that left the Cuban city last Tuesday morning, reached Churchill Downs at noon Friday, fifteen hours behind schedule time. The delay was due to two freight wrecks on the road, one between Miami and Jacksonville and the other between Jacksonville and Atlanta. The other five cars were rerouted at Corbin, Ky., three going to Huntington, one to Lexington and the other to Omaha. The stables that reached Louisville in- Continued on eighth page. The Mueller outfit, which was in charge of trainer J. H. Moody, included Randell, Wida, Foul Weather and Silvergrift. The latter was the only one to arrive in bad condition and Dr. Henry Harthill was called in attendance and diagnosed the complaint as influenza with complications. The Mueller stable had a fairly prosperous season in Cuba. Jockey August Yerrat, who rode for the stable all winter, accompanied the shipment here and will pilot the stables horses at the forthcoming Kentucky meetings. Ben Bolt and Firetoma, the latter a Kentucky Derby eligible, were the only horses in the shipment consigned to Harned Bros. and Jones. Ben Bolt proved the more useful horse of the two, as lie succeeded in winning four races, while Firetoma scored in only one of his starts. Hullo was the best breadwinner in the W. L. Drake stable with six victories to his credit over the Havana track. Trainer Bob Gilmore is going very slowly in the preparation of Carl Wiedemanns crack four-year-old In Memoriam, but he feels satisfied that the colt will be ready when the Churchill Downs meeting opens. The colt appears to be in the best of health and is taking his preliminary training in a most gratifying manner. His owner has mapped out a busy season for In Memoriam, as the colt has been named for all the big eastern and western handicaps and all of the big features to be run at Saratoga. His first stake engagement will probably be in the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs the opening day of the meeting. The recently appointed Kentucky State Racing Commission will hold its first meeting at Lexington Saturday, when it is expected Thomas A. Combs will be named chairman and Polk Laffoon vice-chairman. It is also understood that at the meeting dates for the spring meetings will be allotted and officials for the tracks announced.
