REVIEW OF CANADIAN RACING SEASON OF 1924 Total of ,914,060 Distributed in Stakes and Purses by Various Racing Associations Above Figures Represent Gain of More Than 00,000 Over Distribution of 1923 J. K. L. Ross Largest Money Winner on Circuit Hallucination Leads the Horses Jockey . N. Foden Carries Off Riding Honors Complete Summary of Years Racing - All elements considered, Canadian racing made a cheerful exhibit this year, showing a decided gain in total distributed over the corresponding record of last year. Some of this is accounted for by the return cf Windsor to the fold and the addition of Long Branch to the tracks in operation, but not all of it. Racing is carried on in Canada under distressful burdens of taxation, forced on the government by the stern necessity of reaching into every money-producing business to defray the heavy annual expenses entailed by the World War. The Canadian racing bodies are standing up to this onerous condition manfully and carry on anyhow, like true, sons of Great Britain. That they have been able to do and make ends meet is creditable to their tenacity in meeting and overcoming the difficulties, as well as to their patriotic discharge of their share of the obligations resting on them as citizens of the Dominion. In the items cf total distribution and daily average of disbursements to winning owners, the Ontario Jockey Club of Toronto maintained its customary leadership. Its place as a model racing organization has been cordially recognized on this side of the line for years past. Whether it made money or lost money is a secret between itself and the government, but certain it is there was no falling away from the high standard of values characteristic of its stake race offerings. The group of tracks depending on Detroit for patronage, Windsor, Kcnilworth and Devonshire, are reported to have experienced something of a falling off from preceding years in the matter of attendance, but this has not been officially confirmed. The racing at all three was of the most attractive character and deserving of overflowing success. It is worth noting that the racing over the far northwestern tracks of British Columbia was unusually popular and well patronized, especially at Vancouver. Of course, promoters there have no such dense population to rely on as those of eastern Canada. A set-off to this is that nothing near the rate of taxation is levied on their receipts as that exacted from the Ontario racing organizations. An outgrowth of this pleasing condition is the steady expansion of thoroughbred breeding. Quite a surprising number of well-bred English and American sires and brood mares are in use. It is not beyond the bounds of reason that a young champion from there will in time successfully challenge the representatives of eastern breeding on the eastern Canadian tracks. Following are details of results of the Canadian racing season that show its salient features, the first tabulation disclosing the distribution, of money at each meeting, percentage of winning favorites and other interesting information. This honor fell to Commander J K. L. Ross of Montreal, and his powerful racing establishment carried off the lions share of the prizes distributed by the various racing organizations of the Dominion. The Ross horses accounted for a total of thirty-nine winning races, finishing second in twenty-seven and third in nineteen. The money won in the stakes and purses amounted to ,G95. The Seagram Stable of Waterloo, Ont., which has for many years past figured conspicuously in Canadian racing, enjoyed a most successful year, finishing second to Commander Ross in money earning, with forty-six winning races, which together with second and third moneys of twenty-seven and thirty-one placed horses, added a total of ,100 to the stables coffers. Third on the list is one of the American invaders in the Kenton Stable of H. G. Bedwell. which has every reason to be satisfied with its campaign oVer the Canadian tracks. The Kenton Stable horses finished first in fifty-four races, second in a like number, third in sixty-four and returned to the Slates .with the tidy sum of .390 to show for its endeavors over the tracks across the border. Other owners who did well in Canada this year are A. C. Bostwick, with winnings of 8,135; Mrs. A. E. Alexandra, 0,720; W. M. Cain, S,875 ; AV. G. Campbell, 4,745 ; H. S. Hart, 3,735 and E. F. He won five races, finished twice and third in the same number, accounting for 2,795 in prize money. His stake victories in Canada included the Windsor Hotel Cup at Blue Bonnets, National Handicap at Hamilton, Dominion Handicap at Fort Erie. Vrana won the Breeders Stakes at Woodbine, the Canadian Derby at Fort Erie, the Maple Leaf and Stanley Produce Stakes at Woodbine, in addition to finishing second in the Breeders Stakes and Durham Cup at Woodbine, and the Colonial Handicap at Hamilton.
