ALTAWOOD GOING ABROAD Dispatch From Paris Says Colt Will Race in France. Parisian Xcwsapcrs Laud Sportsmanship of J. E. Widcncr for His Contemplated Action. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. PARIS, France, Dec. 2. That America will be represented in the running of some of the long-distance events on the French turf next year is the hope of those interested in racing here. Altawood, Joseph E. Wideners three-year-old colt, is to be sent here next year and turned over to trainer Jerry Welsh, who has charge of the American sportsmans French stable, according to published reports. French newspapers laud the sportsmanship of Mr. Widener in so quickly returning the compliment of Pierre Wertheimers shipment of Epinard to the United States for the international races last summer. Mr. Widener, the Philadelphia sportsman, and member of the Jockey Club, who, in addition to breeding and racing in this country, maintains an establishment abroad, purchased Altawood from C. Bruce Head for a large sum. He has achieved considerable success with his European establishment. Neither Mr. Widener nor trainer Ham Keene could be reached Tuesday for verification of the above cable. Altawood is considered one of the best long distance racers since Exterminator was at his best and those who witnessed his sterling performances this year, even when beaten, notably in the Kentucky Derby and the International Special No. 3, in both of which races he finished fourth, coming with a wonderful burst of speed that would have brought victory in a few more strides. Altawood showed his prowess in winning three big long distance features, the Latonia Cup, the Bowie Handicap and the Pimlico Cup. " If sent abroad he should make a worthy representation to uphold the reputation American horses have already established in international competition.
