i CLOSE FINISHES AT TIJUANA e Dan Arvi and Cocksure Stage Exciting Contest in Second. ♦ Jay Roberts and Splrea AI?o Furnish Close Finish — Etolle du Quesnay Wins First Rare at Short Odds. SAN DIEGO, Calif.. April 10.— The return of clear weather and fast going provided the Tijuana Jockey Clubs patrons with many thrills today in the way of close and exciting racing. Next to last at the stretch turn. Green Spring scored a sensational victory in the fifth when Mortenson, quick to grasp the opportunity presented when the leiders swung wide at the stretch turn, drove his mount through the opening and in a desperate finish got up in time to beat Frank S. to the wire. The distance was five and a half furlongs and seven started. Fort Churchill was the favored one. but never threatened at any time. Frank S. was much the best in the early st.ig.-s and. taking a big lead, showed the way to the stretch, where he swung wide and the others went with him. a ith the exception of Green Spring. The latter cut in toward the inner rail and. saving much ground, was lipped on Frank S. when they were finally straightened out. In the drive to tl.e wire Green Spring proved best and got up in the last fifty yards. Zorro also displayed plenty of speed in the straight and took third from Fort Cnurehill with ease. The Mira Monte Stock Farm provided one of the shortest priced winners of the meeting, when Ktoile du Quesnay, bred in France by A. K. Macomber. scored in the first race. The conditions were allowances, two-year-olds, four and a half furlongs. The Main-tenon filly, a quick beginner, was rushed into the lead at the rise of the barrier, then taken back before the first eighth post, allowing Shasta King to show the way. Back of the leading pair and right at their heels was Bank Jr.. a first time starter. This was the order to the half, where Bank Jr. quit and Baauurea took his place. Shasta King was still in the lead when they were straighte-ncMl out in the stretch, but Robert?; called on Etoile du Quesnay and, after a spirited battle, she assumed command anel appeared an easy winner, but suddenly faltered anel appeared about to emit a sixteenth from home. Roberts rallied her and, in the last fifty yards, she came again and got her neck in front in the closing strides. Samarons rae-e was a good one. Off slowly anel impeded immediately after the start, he made up the lost ground gradually and. pissing the others one by one, was gaining rapidly on the leaders at the finish. Cocksure and Dan Arvi made a race of it from start to finish in the second, fighting it out every inch of the way. Cocksure was best but he was a tired horse at the end. The remaining twelve starters never figured at any stage of the race. When the barrier was released Dan Arvi went to the front with Cocksure right after him. The latter took the lead at the first eighth post and from there to the finish both were doing their best closely lapped on each other, only a head separating them with Cocksure the leader and ultimate winner. Iat Carter sh.nved remarkable speed in the stretch, coming from far back and getting up in the last stride to nose out Chet G. for third. Albiem Boy attempted to race with the two leaders but after a half had enough and dreipped to the rear. It was probably the best race of the long winter meeting at this pejint. The return of fast going worked wonders for the entertainment of the race fans in the way of close finishes, the third also being close and hotly contested. C. E. Thompsons Jay Roberts was winner here over Spirea. He got on even terms with the filly at the head of the stretch and they raced as a team the whole length of the straight, first one. then the ther, having the advantage, but right at the end Jay Roberts nose was shelving in front. Spireas de-feat was due to Martinez use of her in chasing the early pae-emaker Herald. After rae-ing him into defeat Jay Re berts challenged and took the lead, heilding it to the three-quarters post, where Pendergast wisely gave him a breathing spell. Spirea went to the front and continued te show the way until Jay Roberts again challenged. Miss Prosperity ran an even race throughout and was easily best of the others. Four claims were filed for Tis Seth in the third race. F. C. Marmet won in the draw and got him for ,000. ♦
