Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April II, 1905 Racing at Washington, D. C, New Orleans, ; Memphis and -an Francisco. Allan-a-Dale is temporarily out of training. He stepped on a piece of glass at the Lexington track, severely cutting his left forefoot. The Benning meeting, the best in the history of the Washington Jockey Club in the matter of attendance, if not otherwise, will close tomorrow with the Second Benning Spring Handicap and the Jesse Brown Cup, for two-year-olds, as the feature of the card. Willie Knapp and Honiton proved a winning combination in the five and a half furlong handicap at Oakland today. Honiton showed fine speed in a great stretch run that landed him home half a length before Americano. Sad Sam appeared to have the race well in hand at the stretch turn, but when Honiton challenged gave it up and just outstayed Glendi nning for third. Turfmen are freely predicting that the victorious horse in the Carter Handicap next Saturday at Aqueduct will be one that has been racing at Benning or Memphis. At one time Davy Johnsons Roseben, with 113 pounds, seemed to have the Carter well in hand, but the subsequent erratic performances of the son of Ben Strome served to weaken the faith of his followers, so that now they are inclined to pass him up. On his return to Louisville from Memphis last week, Judge Charles F. Price, who will preside at the meeting at Churchill Downs and thereafter at Highland Park and Fort Erie, told his friends that Agile is the best three year-old he has seen in ten years. "While I do not say he will win the Kentucky Derby," said he, "I know that he will be a powerful contender for the honors. I believe the Derby, if only Ranis Horn and Agile were to start, would be the best race of its kind run here in years, but there are other corking good three-year olds in the bunch that will start and the race is bound to be a grand one."
