Healey Healey $ $ J This brilliant contest not only put Pimlico on the racing map, but stamped the winner as a horse out of the ordinary, and to perpetuate his name and fame, the officials of the club, of which the governor of Maryland, Oden Bowie, was then president, determined to establish a stake, worthy of the winner, and the scene of his victory over Maj. Thomas D. Doswells homebred, Bullfield colt, Ecliptic, and T. G. Moores stout-hearted Foster, afterwards a great four-miler. i I Thus a quiet little New Jersey village, near where he was foaled, has given its name to a sporting event known the world over, and Preakness and Pimlico are historically and alliteratively associated, wherever the sport is known. For the 1927 running of the Preakness Stakes, which has grown from a modest ,500 stake to one of the richest of American turf prizes, with 0,000 added, fifteen splendid thoroughbreds are named to start Monday before a capacity crowd that is certain to fill old Pimlico. It is a high-class representation, full of three-year-olds — thirteen colts and two fillies, one of the latter being Fair Star, the leading money winner two-year-old of 1926. New York, Chicago, Kentucky and Canada will have colorbearers in the big race and as the majority of the Preakness starters are eligible for the Kentucky I erby, there is additional interest lent to the decision of Marylands most notable event. Scapa Flow, Whiskery, Justice F., Fair Star and Buddy Bauer are among the stars that will clash for this rich turf prize and there is every assurance that a stui endous struggle of equine giants will be witnessed by those who are fortunate enough to see the 1927 Preakness Stakes decided. II. C. Kiddle arrived this morning from New York with Justice F.. which will be a starter in the Preakness, Monday. He announced that jockey F. Stevens would come over from New York to ride the colt.
