candidates that will strive for the rich prize and honor that goes with a victory in the fiftythird renewal of Kentuckys famed racing epic the Kentucky Derby Heavy clouds cold atmosphere and a heavilycushioned track somewhat militated against outstanding fast performances but none of the participants are in need of more than the usual limbering up exercise for they are air in the pink of impres ¬ sive not that his trial of a mile and a quarter the Derby distance in 20975 was anything out of the ordinary but because of the ease and willingness with which he went about his task He was ridden by H Shillick and had up his Derby impost Beginning from the Derby start he traversed the first quarter in 24 the half mile in 493 the threequarters in 1 15 and the mile in 1 42 At no time was the Preakness winner asked for his best speed and he was eased the final quarter to conclude his trial in 2 09 09WHISKERY WHISKERY TINDER RESTRAINT RESTRAINTWhiskery Whiskery was also kept under restraint throughout the mile and a quarter trial and Shillick who also handled him kept the colt at an even pace throughout as follows quarter 2G half mile 52Vs threequarters 11S and the mile in 1 45
