FLAT IRON SURPRISES Green Briar Stable Racer Out ¬ stays WellBacked Percentage Anita Peabody Makes Impressive Debut in Chicagoans Colors Monster Crowd Present IXUISVILLE Ky May 12 The Green Briar Stables Flat Iron coupled with Miner vus was the winner of the principal race on Churchill Downs Thursdays program and incidentally took the first purse of the meet ¬ ing for the Winnipeg sportsman Flat Irons victory resulted in the downfall of the heavilybacked Percentage The race was over the chute mile and the time 1 38 vvas the fastest of the present meeting meetingNine Nine of the best milers in these parts started with Percentage favored He promptly raced into the lead and encouraged his many backers by showing the way and seemingly able to draw away when called on Flat Iron however held on tenaciously from the start and much to the surprise of the crowd passed Percentage at the stretch turn and in the hard drive that followed outstayed Percentage While the leading pair were fighting it out Rejuvena ¬ tion and Minervus also came steadily and both were in a fair way to pass the leaders had the race been at a longer distance distanceThe The race was a sparkler four of the con ¬ tenders Flat Iron Percentage Rejuvenation and Minervus fighting it out until Flat Iron drew away in the last sixteenth sixteenthThursdays Thursdays attendance at Churchill Downs was one of the largest that has witnessed the sport over the historic course excepting Derby days or special occasions They wit ¬ nessed some highly exciting sport in which close finishes predominated and contributed vastly to the enjoyment of the big throng throngFATORITES FATORITES DISAPPOINT DISAPPOINTFavorites Favorites fared poorly some of the well backed ones going down to defeat The main disappointments were Percentage and Nor easter The latter had the call in the sixth race in which some good sprinters started The winner was Belgenland which suffered extensively by interference in the early stages but came fast in the stretch and managed to overhaul Sixty in the final strides Nor easter swerved repeatedly when pressed hard and was tiring badly in the last sixteenth sixteenthThe The Bloomfield Stables Kid o Kildare making his first start of the year was win ¬ ner over a limit field of maiden threeyear olds and over in the opening race at threequarters of a mile His victory was impressive and the son of High Time easily disposed of Winging in the final drive to win by a length Winging which raced into the lead after reaching the stretch barely lasted to save second pace by a nose from the fastfinishing John William II Kana wha which finished in fourth place was the pacemaker for the first halfmile halfmileThe The Leona Farm Stables Anita Peabody carried John Herz colors to a successful debut in the second race at four and a half furlongs bringing eight maiden fillies to the post postIt It was Anita Peabodys first start and she performed in a manner that stamps her a horse of great possibilities She suffered extensively soon after the start when several on the outside primarily Miss Lee cut across illlU llIIUJItU 1 IIH5C Ht l IV V Anita Peabody was shuffled back and forced to race far back until the stretch was reached where she was ridden wide to secure racing room She came with a rush through the stretch and passed those in front of her steadily Miss Lee which had held sway from the start was caught in the final strides after a courageous exhibition on the part of Anita Peabody Mr and Mrs Herz who witnessed the filly race were highly elated with her success successUASULI UASULI SCORES SCORESRasuli Rasuli after closly following the pace un ¬ der restraint for threequarters came with a rush in the stretch to wear down the leaders and win from Xabisco Jealous and nine others in the third race at one mile and a sixteenth At the finish he was draw ¬ ing away while Nabisco outstayed Jealous for second place J G Denny quit badly The winner had confident backing and was well ridden by T Pascuma PascumaThe The colors of J C McGee which have played a prominent part in the racing here were again seen in triumph when his Kath rine W defeated a band of twoyearold fillies brought together at four and onehalf furlongs and under claiming conditions in the fourth nice The winner raced in advance of her oppo ¬ nents from ths start and standing a long hard drive under JJnck Garner almost the full length of the stretch was to the place of finish a neck in front of Quicken with Owemt third
