TO RACE IN CALIFORNIA Judge Joseph A Murphy Secures Lease on Tanforan Track Plans to Hold Meeting of ThirtySeven Days DaysFrom From Oct 27 to Doc 10 AttractlTe AttractlTeStakes Stakes Are to Be Offered SAN FRANCISCO Calif June 13 How ¬ ard Spreckles secretary of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club today announced that Joseph A Murphy had taken a lease on the Tanforan track with an option of taking over a con ¬ trolling interest in the Pacific Coast Jockey Cluh propertyFrom ownes of the property From this time on said Mr Spreckles Judge Murphy will be in absolute control of the property but every breeder in Cali fornial will aid in making his race meetings a success and the Pacific Coast Jockey Club with its large social and business connections will actively cooperate with him toward the same end endST ST LOUIS Mo June 13 Upon the receipt of the news that the lease and option of purchase on control of the Tanforan track had been assigned to him Joseph A Murphy announced that he woud reopen Tanforan for a thirtyseven day meeting commencing Oct 27 and closing Dec 10 No purse less than 1000 will be offered and an attractive list of stakes headed by the San Francisco Handicap 25000 added at a mile and a six ¬ teenth will be announced later laterThis This is not the decision of a moment said judge Murphy It is the result of a carefully thought out mode of procedure Since January I have been in constant com ¬ munication with eminent counsel on the coast We have already gone over the history of race track legislation in California and the existing evils at the time which it is sought to remedy We have made exhaustive studies of decisions in courts of record and have finally agreed that a method of racing under which the public can participate can be de ¬ vised which will not transgress the present statutes At t e proper time and place we will establish this thisI I have recently returned from San Fran ¬ cisco I checked up the Tanforan plant and found it in fine shape We contemplate in ¬ creasing the parking space building 170 new stalls bringing the number to 700 and making other improvements I am assured of the full strength of the Rossiter Macom ber Spreckles Boots Marehbank Vangor don Long McGill Hartwell and other local establishments and with what we will ship from the East we will have a great meet ¬ ing We are opposed to long meetings and too much racing and our plans do not in ¬ clude a spring meeting
