RHINOCK WINS BY A NECK Gamely Withstands Final Chal ¬ lenge of J N Camden Mare Withdrawals Reduce Havilancl Hotel Handi ¬ cap Field to Four Starters Cyclops Shows Best Form and Wins LATONIA Ky June 13 Latonia experi ¬ enced weather and track conditions of the adverse variety today but a large atten ¬ dance testified to the firmness with which the sport is established at the famed Covington track The morning witnessed one of the heaviest downpours of the spring season and with the rain came a considerable drop in temperature that made for an afternoon of fall rather than spring climatic conditions The skies remained heavily overcast and there was a constant threat of rain The morning downpour naturally resulted in a sudden change in the track which became muddy muddyWith With the altered footing there came a rush of trainers for the stewards quar ¬ ters where the official sanction of withdraw ¬ als reduced the program fields by nine horses Unfortunately the featured Haviland Hotel Handicap was the chief sufferer four of the nine horses excused coining from among the carded field of eight eightDespite Despite the presence of but four in the field the race was well contested and had a happy result in the success of Rhinock from the Parkview Stable of Mrs Geo B Cox Cincinnati sportswoman Rhinock scored by a neck from J N Camdens Roth ermel the driving finish stirring the large crowd to the highest point of enthusiasm reached during the afternoon Ten lengths back of Rothermal the Coventry Stables Cotlogomor beat Fair Star by a length for third place Rhinock was ridden by Walter Lilley LilleyThe The distance was negotiated in 149 by the winner a splendid performance over the prevailing track condition conditionCyclops Cyclops showed a return to good form when he outsprinted Genial Host Thistle Gold and two others over threequarters in the Lewiston Purse the secondary feature After disposing of Thistle Gold the early pacemaker at the stretch turn Cyclops was never in danger of losing the lead which he made secure in the stretch Genial Host raced from last place to overhaul the tiring Thistle Gold for second place the latter hold ¬ ing Rocky Cliff safe for third The winner was an outsider and was ridden by A An ¬ derson dersonMose Mose Goldblatts Good Shepherd making Continued on twentieth page
