AMERICAN DERBY 1929 Entries For Notable Race Close Monday April 15 Nominations Also Due For Six SixOther Other Features Washington WashingtonPark Park Improvements The Airierican Derby from 1884 to 1904 in ¬ clusive the greatest of American racing spec ¬ tacles in this country appears destined to be restored to its former glory and prestige once more taking rank with the foremost of stake races run annually on the North American continent This year as was an ¬ nounced some time ago the American Derby will be run at Washington Park with an in ¬ creased value of 30000 added and a silver trophy Entries for this notable race and six other features offered by the Washing ¬ ton Park Jockey Club will close Monday April 15 Besides the Derby the 10000 added Francis S Peabody Memorial the 510000 added Illinois Oaks the Robert M Sweitzer Handicap Thomas Curran Memorial Debutante Stakes and Washington Park Handicap each with 5000 added are the other stellar events carded for decision dur ¬ ing the 1929 spring meeting at Washington Park ParkWhen When the announcement was made that the American Derby would be run at Wash ¬ ington Park this year it was likewise made known that the Homewood course would he remodeled and greatly improved The work was started last fall and continued through ¬ out the winter whenever the weather per ¬ mitted Much progress has been made and everything will be completed long bfore the scheduled meeting at that course courseThe The grandstand has been enclosed at the north south and west ends and the mutuels booths will be located in an addition built on the west side of the structure to be reached by the ramps from any part of the grand ¬ stand INNOTATION IJf CLUBHOUSE CLUBHOUSEThe The new clubhouse marks an innovation in race track construction haying a bleacher on the roof of the main part of the buildings with a large dining and rest rooms at the southwest corner of the building The pa ¬ vilion that was formerly in front of the temporary clubhouse has been moved and will be used as a bleacher bleacherThe The floors of the grandstand have been raised and paved with brick an improve ¬ ment over the crushed stone floors in the old stand The paddock has been placed to the rear and south of the stand and club ¬ house houseAlong Along the inside rail the landscape garden ¬ ers have done a lot of work to help beautify the center of the course Hundreds of ever ¬ greens and thousands of shrubs and bushes have been set out outThe The Illinois Central has rushed the work on the electrification into the grounds and the public will be carried right to the en ¬ trance of the stand making Washington Park one of the most accessible of all race tracks tracksA A new station and loading platform will be built and additional parking space has been prepared to take care of a greater num ¬ ber of cars A new road in the south end of the grounds has been graded and is ready for surfacing surfacingWhen When completed new Washington Park should prove to be one of the most modern of race tracks and a befitting place for the running of the American Derby
