PASSING OF TIJUANA Proposed New Course at Aqua Caliente to Take Its Place Old Track Built in 1915 Almost Ruined by byFlood Flood the Following Year Coffroth Handicap History Amalgamation of the Agua Caliente and Tijuana Jockey Club forces for the purpose of establishing racing in the Tijunna district on a higher plane than it has ever occupied with the consequent abandonment of the present Tijuana track leaves traditions in its wake that are of intense interest to followers of the sport old and young throughout the country countryFor For the present Tijuana course soon to give way to a larger and more modern plant which it is planned will compare favorably with the great establishments in New York Kentucky and Illinois has been the setting of events that will linger long i memory memoryIt It has been the scene in recent years of the running of the most valuable race for all aged horses on the American con ¬ tinent the Coffroth Handicap a race that has reached nearly to the 100000 mark in value to the winner In its last running the winners share was 98250 98250The The first question that the rank and file of racing fans will ask in connection with the abandonment of Coffroths track will be as to the status of this race which with its far reaching future book is one of the chief topics of sporting interest for four or five months of the year No announcement has yet been made regarding the Coffroth but as this race did more than anything else to ad ¬ vertise the sport in that section it is logical to expect that it will be continued as a fix ¬ ture tureThis This is the natural conclusion since the an ¬ nouncement that James W Coffroth has cast his lot with the Agua Caliente promoters This announcement in fact makes what ap ¬ peared at first to be a vague and uncertain promotional idea to be accepted as a practical certainty for without the joining of forces it was difficult to see how a new enterprise of such great magnitude could be undertaken with much hope of success without first a conflict which would be fatal to one or both interests The new project backed by mil ¬ lions might eventually exterminate the older one but at an inevitable great sacrifice which it did not seem likely any set of pro ¬ moters would risk riskAccording According to the latest announcements the situation is that Mr Coffroth representing the present Tijuana Jockey Club has agreed to go in with Messrs Crofton Long Bow ¬ man Jolson Schenk Pantages Mills Mc ¬ Allister and others some of whom were originally associated with him in the present club Details of the combination and plans have already been printed in Daily Racing Form FormThere There are few more picturesque characters Continued on twelfth page
