PEACE CHANCE TRIUMPHS IN RICH BELMONT STAKES High Quest Finishes Second With Stablemate Good Goods Third Second Consecutive Victory in Belmont Park Fixture for Joseph E Widener Plat Eye Adds National NationalStallion Stallion Stakes to List of Victories NEW YORK N Y June 9 Peace Chance in a brilliantly run race carried the silks of Joseph E Widener to an easy victory in the famous old Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park today Back of him and soundly beaten came Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes Preakness winner High Quest and Good Goods another that carried her silks was third beating A C Schwartz Gay Monarch The prize carried a net value of 43410 to the winner and was of much greater value than the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness which went to the Brookmeade silks It Itwas was a swiftly run race when the son of Chance Shot and Peace Chance finished the long gallop in 2291s establishing a record for the race though Man p War still holds the track record of 228 It was the second consecutive victory for the president of the Westchester Association for last year it was his Hurryoff that he led to the scales after the running runningAs As the colt was brought back to the pad ¬ dock after his thrilling victory Mr Widener led him to the scales and with Wright was given a great ovation by the largest racing crowd of the year Peace Chance was not the only one to repeat a stable victory Plat Eye in a gamely run race duplicated the feat of Black Buddy of last year when he took the rich National Stallion Stakes Peace Chance accomplished little as a juve ¬ nile and his racing this year gave no sug ¬ gestion of his high quality He was brought up to the running magnificently by Pete Coyne and admirably ridden by W D Wright the stable jockey jockeyWhen When the horses appeared on the course there was little time lost before the stalls were reached There Peace Chance all but unseated Wright as he reared Cassidy after two or three unsuccessful attempts to have him enter his stall had him taken to the outside of the machine and it was from there gallopThe that he left for his winning gallop The eight left in excellent alignment and while Gay Monarch actually began in front he did not hold that position for as many as half a dozen strides Then Mack Garner went out to show the way with High Quest He had the son of Sir Gallahad III under a snug restraint as he went into the first turn a length and a half to the good Peace Chance was under restraint back of him and Sir Thomas was galloping on the rail and in third position positionChicstraw Chicstraw followed these and then came Roustabout Good Goods Gay Monarch and Rose Cross brought up the rear As High Quest galloped along in front Garner had him under wraps that brought a first quar ¬ ter in 24 and the colt was going so strongly that he seemed able to gallop all afternoon Peace Chance and Sir Thomas held to their positions and Chicstraw was still well within striking distance as the company raced through the back stretch Continued on twentyninth page PEACE CHANCE TRIUMPHS IN RICH BELMONT STAKES I Continued from first page j Then for no good reason Chicstraw soon began to labor a bit and drop back backIt It was going to the turn from the back stretch that Pascuma moved with Sir Thomas and slipped through on the inside until he was right on the heels of High Quest but Wright had eased back as Pas ¬ cuma moved He was not yet ready to ask his colt to run The half had been reached in 49 and the six furlongs in 115 a nice even pace for such a gallop Sir Thomas did not last long in his challenge challengeJust Just as he threatened to go to High Quest he tired badly and as he dropped back he was shuffled out of the contention Andstill High Quest seemed to be racing well within himself himselfIt It was not until safely into the stretch that Wright made his move with Peace Chance There he shook up the colt and in a dozen strides he was alongside High Quest Then Garner went to a drive but the Widener colt racing straight and true was just beginning to run He swept to the com ¬ mand with little effort and crossing the line he was half a dozen lengths clear clearWhen When Plat Eye carried the silks of the Greentree Stable to victory in the National Stallion Stakes he added 14170 to his score and completed the same double that Black Buddy scored for the same silks last year for his last previous start had seen him winner of the Juvenile Stakes Coucci rode Black Buddy as he rode Plat Eye in this re ¬ newal of the rich prize so that he shared in the double The victory also saw the Bronx Italian in his second winner of the day in as many mounts for he had scored with Vermouth in the opening race racePlat Plat Eye just about settled the question of juvenile supremacy at this time and the manner in which he caught Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes Psychic Bid to take the prize left no doubt of his quality There was some excuse for Young Native another of Mrs Sloanes starters for he was bumped by St Bernard as he left his stall and being knocked handicapSix off stride suffered a handicap Six went to the post and it was a good start though the bumping of Young Native after the start was unfortunate for him As they left Plat Eye was first to show the way but he was at once outrun by Psychic Bid which quickly drew away into a good lead over the small field Plat Eye and Young Native which had recovered from his early trouble were closely lapped back of the son of Chance Play and St Bernard was show ¬ ing the way to Bachelor Dinner DinnerApproaching Approaching the final furlong it looked for a time as though Mrs Sloanes silks would be first and second Psychic Bid was holding his lead and Young Native was going EyeThen stride for stride with Plat Eye Then in the last furlong Coucci sat down for one of his rides that has so often brought victory He sent Plat Eye over next to the rail and as he called on the son of Chicle he began to draw up on Psychic Bid Jones went to a desperate drive on the Sloane colt but Plat Eye continued to gain He shook off Young Native and running straight and true he was alongside and then past Coucci continued his vigorous ride to the end though the winning margin was two lengths Psychic Bid had beaten Young Native by four lengths and the Pompey colt was three lengths before St Bernard BernardThe The Good and Plenty Steeplechase over the two mile course brought an excellent contest between Joseph E Wideners Bush ¬ ranger and Rigan McKinneys Nesconset They battled it out from the last jump to the finish with Bushranger the winner The others were beaten off and Arthur Ha gans Dock Light took third from F Am ¬ brose Clarks Hurry Harry while Abenaki the only other starter was a distant last
