RIFTED CLOUDS NARROWLY Earns Close Decision Over Bartolozzi in Winsted Handicap at Empire Biermans Powerful Finish Plays Important ImportantPart Part in the Victory Bartolozzia BartolozziaDefeat Defeat Stuns EMPIRE CITY N Y Oct 20 The Wool ford Farm establishment none too fortunate in recent metropolitan campaigning had an extremely favorable break at Empire City today in the short six furlongs Winstead Handicap the class D event which featured a sultry afternoons competition There Rifted Clouds a homebred daughter of Insco and Green Leaf showing unexpected cour ¬ age came from behind the pace to nail the heavily played favorite Bartolozzi in the the final stride and so take an eyelash de ¬ cision A powerful finish by Bicrman played no small part in the accounting One length back of the runner up the pacemaking Shoulder Arms was a mighty weary third There was support for the successful filly as she was steady at 7 to 1 at the post after opening at the same price The downfall of Bartolozzi was a tough break to the public as he was the best supported choice of the day and the fourth to fail He broke slowly and it was this that cost him the race The Missouri maid turned in a sharp race to complete the distance in 109 that being a second and a fifth off the track record recordPERSISTENT PERSISTENT BIEKMAN BIEKMANRifted Rifted Clouds was the closest attendant to the pacemaking Shoulder Arms for the first three furlongs but dropped back to third place when Bartolozzi moved up on the outside The two leaders moved away from her slightly once straightened out in the stretch and at the furlong pole her cause appeared a hopeless one However Bierman refused to give up and persistent urging with hand heel and whip brought the daugh ¬ ter of Insco on again to gain the award in the afternoons most thrilling finish finishBartolozzi Bartolozzi left the post slowly and was outpaced for the first quarter He moved up steadily at the far turn and when roused with the whip while making the curve went after Shoulder Arms in resolute fashion He headed him at the top of the stretch and in a bitter duel wore him down about twenty yards from the finish only to hang right at the end endENCHANTED ENCHANTED EASILY EASILYEnchanted Enchanted claimed out of his previous start at Jamaica for 2500 by David Butler struck the first blow of the day for favorite followers when he drove to a length and a half victory in the mile and a sixteenth race which followed the main event The three yearold son of Polydor and Phantom Fairy had to overcome vigorous interference at the far turn and was plainly best in the race Closest to him at the end was First Bid with the tiring pacemaker La Charite three lengths further away There was a world of money for White Hot which failed to beat a horse and considerable play for Dr Tate This caused the winner to go to the post at 11 to 5 after opening at 2 to 1 He turned in a lively race for a plater in covering the distance in 147 147Shoulder Shoulder Arms had his usual fine turn of speed and held sway for the first five and onehalf furlongs enjoying a three lengths advantage threeeighths of a mile from the finish Right at the end he wilted abruptly Little Miracle ran an even race never prov ¬ ing a factor while Sunsun broke last and there he remained His was a mighty dull effort effortYarberry Yarberry rode his third winner of the day when he brought home Crystal Prince in the mile and seventy yards at the end of the card To score the old son of Prince of Bourbon outfinished Labor Day and far back of that one was Bad Dreams Labor Day was the choice
