Here and There on the Turf Aneroid Gives Farting Salute Has Compiled Fine Record Jacolas Failure Surprising Would Revive K J C Stakes John A Manfuso Washington sportsman who has derived much pleasure in the own ¬ ership of several horses these past few years made up his mind during the summer to retire Aneroid at the conclusion of the current season and so the Riggs Handicap victory of the fiveyearold son of The Por ¬ ter Outburst by Messenger came as sort of a departing salute even if he isnt as fortunate in his remaining engagements the Bowie and Bryan and OHara Handicaps The muddy condition of the Pimlico track Saturday probably was a strong contrib ¬ uting factor in Aneroids victory as Jacola and Esposa both came through with very disappointing performances but his effort was outstanding just the same He had 116 pounds on his back and ran the mile and threesixteenths in 159 ii this being evi dence enough of a smart race with the track being in the condition it was wasAneroid Aneroid likely was not as good as he has been at his peak in winning the Riggs as he has had much taken out of him because of recurring unsoundness but with Jacola and JEsposa doing so poorly he ran his race and won Perhaps the finest effort ever put out by Aneroid was in the Suburban Handicap of 1937 in which he took the lead early and just breezed to his opposition all the way in the exceptional time of 201 for the mile and onequarter He held this form on through the Brooklyn Handicap in which he carried level weight of 122 pounds with Seabiscuit and engaged the champion in a duel through the long Aqueduct stretch that saw the latter Winning only by the smallest of noses He got even with Sea biscuit in the San Antonio Handicap at Santa Anita last winter by defeating him by an inch or so soLike Like Seabiscuit and numerous other horses which have written romantic pages in the history of racing Aneroid rose from com ¬ parative obscurity He was bred by John Hay Whitney who permitted him to be put up at auction in Virginia because he was an undersized yearling Dion Kerr saw something about the youngster that appealed to him and obtained the colt for 300 for Manfuso Under the latters banner Aneroid won himself out early as a twoyearold and at Saratoga that summer he gave the Whit ¬ ney forces firsthand cause for regret by defeating a smart field fieldAneroid Aneroid developed physically and with it class and ability with the result that he goes into retirement whether or not he does any ¬ thing in his remaining engagements with earnings of 73085 Jacolas disappointment In the Riggs is dif ¬ ficult to understand She appeared in good flesh going to the post and came out of the engagement in apparent sound condition but Edward Friendlys filly lacked the dash which marked her trio of stakeswinning efforts at Laurel In which she stepped away from Seabiscuit and other good horses Go ¬ ing by the stand for the first time the daughter of Jacopo and La France was under mild urging to get a position and when vig ¬ orously shaken up at the far turn she failed to rcjpond As she had won In various sorts of going at Laurel the track condition was not held against Jacola as it was against Esposa With trainer Matt Brady believing the veteran member of William Zieglers sta ¬ ble has not gone stale he does not intend to run her any more over a track in which mud can be splashed splashedSympathy Sympathy should be extended Mat Winn for his action In discontinuing the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes because It was some ¬ thing he didnt wish to do It was an event supported by a great amount of tradition and if conditions warranted Winn would have boosted the 5000 purse rather than eliminating it entirely But the autumn meet ¬ ings at Churchill Downs have not been very successful and it seems likely none is planned for next year However if condi ¬ tions Improve so that a winning meeting can be staged at the Louisville track in the fall the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes prob ¬ ably will be revived with a purse that will insure a field more in keeping with the events best traditions and not like that whichT M Dorsett easily defeated on Sat ¬ urday
