SWEET WILLOW FIRST IN PAWTUCKET STAKE STAKETurns Turns In FrontRunning Effort in Blackstone Valley Handicap Liberty Flight Takes Place PlacePAWTUCKET PAWTUCKET R L May 10 Sweet Wil ¬ low fleet daughter of Lee O Cotner Sweep ¬ ing Willow racing for her ownerbreeder Robert W Collins stamped herself as one of the topflight fillies of the nation when she picked up 117 pounds and splashed her way through the sloppy going to register in the Blackstone Valley Handicap feature of the closing day program at Narragansett Park ParkDuplicating Duplicating her previous score at the meet ¬ ing when she triumphed in the Spring Hand ¬ icap the speedy fouryearold miss brought her earnings for the jrear to 15985 includ ¬ ing the 4750 earned by capturing todays sixfurlong sprint sprintLiberty Liberty FlighVfrom the string of W F Mannagh drove into second place beaten a length for major honors Well back of the two leaders Halcyon Boy from the stable of B N Kane defeated Allegro for the third award awardAlthough Although preceded out of the stalls by Halcyon Boy it was not long before Howell had Sweet Willow in command The Lee O Cotner miss was permitted to step right along and soon opened up a comfortable lead Halcyon Boy raced next just showing before Wise Bee a stable companion of Lib ¬ erty Flight The latter was permitted to rate along back of he winner all during the run down the back stretch When it was seen thzft none of the leaders rivals early in the action were going to be much of a threat May called on Liberty Flight The highweight moved up readily on the outside and raced into contention Into the stretch Sweet Willow was still out in front but Howell had drawn his bat when Liberty Flight hovj into view viewCUTS CUTS DOWN EARI Y LEAD LEADHowell Howell had Sweet Willow well out into the track making the turn for home May chose a course on the inside of the leader For a time it seemed as if Liberty Flight would be able to move to the leader as he had cut down the early advantage considerably However it had cost Liberty Flight a big effort and through that final furlong he was only able to close ground slowly to be beaten by his own length lengthHalcyon Halcyon Boy under his light impost proved to have more left than the others and took the show honors by better than a cou ¬ ple of lengths lengthsDespite Despite the inclement conditions which prevailed another large crowd was on hand to witness the sport Favorites fared well throughout the afternoon afternoonIn In accomplishing her sterling effort over a sloppy racing strip Sweet Willow was clocked the six furlongs in 111 and re ¬ turned 870 for 2 2With With John R Macomber on hand to wit ¬ ness for the first time a performance of his homebred colt Red Vulcan the threeyear old did not disappoint his owner in the Sea konne Purse secondary attraction at six furlongs and offered fifth on the card Although the half brother to the stake win ¬ ner Columbiana assumed the lead shortly after the start of the spring the big bay was put to strenuous urging by Robert Wholey to achieve his second score of the season Wholey applied practically all his art of riding persuasion through the last furlong to bring Red Vulcan to the finish a driving winner by almost two lengths In the van and charging with determination which might have brought about a different result at a farther distance came B A Darios Blue Warrior A bit more than a length farther back in third position was J D Mamroschs Pavilion with E F Bennetts Meadow Dew fourth
