Charles Hatton THE JUDGES STAND Bv Charles Hatton Interest in Suburban Handicap Importance Stakes Other Areas NEW YORK N Y May 20 Handicapper Jacques Campbell might prefer to be off somewhere in the deep South tooling a snappy speed boat through the sunflecked waters of a verdant bayou and we should not much blame him But it is nevertheless time for the Louisianan to release his weights for Belmonts classical 30000 Suburban which is to be presented over the popular mile and a quarter route on Memorial Day It is no exaggeration to say these Campbellian opinions will be of intense and widespread interest For the nominees run a heavy gamut from Whirlaway and Alsab to Market MarketWise Wise Shut Out Devil Diver Riverland Mipland Boysy Test Track Auto Policies Hialeah Prexy Encouraging Valdina Orphan Rounders Attention Fenelon Apache Marriage and Vagrancy These are not merely among the most celebrated handicap entertainers in the busi ¬ ness They represent virtually a recitation of the com ¬ plete list The thing that lends these Suburban imposts such an observing degree of interest to racing men over the country is that they represent an expert analysis of the form for those box office names that will enhance summer specials in various sections of the country countryGroups Groups of them will appear for fixtures such as Long Islands Suburban Brooklyn and Butler New Englands Massachusetts and Gansett Special Chicagos Washing ¬ ton and Arlington Park Handicaps and the Stars and Stripes Garden States Trenlon Handicap and heaven forfend we have inadvertently overlooked anybodys stake urlaway may possibly receive Campbell s acco ¬ lade of top weight in the Suburban if he is not declared I have no thought of starting him Ben Jones observed to the writer discussing the opulent Mr Longtail and the holiday stake after that brisk Wednesday work I want to run him a sprint or two he added Sarge Swenke is quoted to the interesting effect he chooses some hope of having Alsab ready for the 30000 Stars and Stripes at Washington Park out on the Home wood prairie July 5 This is a sort of National War Relief Day on the American turf It could fall out that the Stars and Stripes will develop the first setto between Mrs Sabaths doughty colt and Whirlaway since that bright afternoon last autumn when they molested one another so entertainingly in the New York Handicap At any rate it gives one quite a lift just to speculate on this possibility possibilityI I cannot be definite about shipping plans nor what engagements Whirlaway will be pointed for until later on Jones remarked But the horse is doing fine he continued reassuringly I am pretty sure that some of the horses will go to Chicago around June 18 I may want to run a few of them hereabout after that date dateIncidentally Incidentally Jones pet charge Nellie L is not in early closing stakes such as the Coaching Club American Oaks and indeed Calumets lone eligible for the fixture mentioned Nippy has been sold to Detroits M Wexler Attentions Suburban weight may be of unique interest for the reason the Corning horse is to be disposed of at public auction at the Westchester Association course on May 28 three days previous to that rich relic of the gay nineties It seems scarcely possible either Campbells assignment or the Suburban engagement would influence his sale in any harmful way The renewed ban on all pleasuredriving in those eastern commonwealths that are usually first to be affected by these transportation restrictions is unlikely to cramp the styles of either Belmont Park or Suffolk Downs patronage in any remarkable degree This ban will in a sense test the efficiency of the policies both associations adopted to discourage Acard transportation Any pronounced slump in attendance would tend to disclose that a good many of their patronage had been exercising their legal right to a more liberal interpretation of the pleasuredriving regulations and now refuse to attend the hard way But that is as we realize we have just said unlikely unlikelyAll All this reminds us of Don Camerons original and incisive slant on the use of gas and rubber Noting that 30000 cars wers parked at the Rose Bowl last year the Calif ornian said There they stood perfectly still from 2 oclock to 5 Not a one used a drop of gas nor an ounce of rubber If they had not been parked outside the bowl people would have been going places in them themThis This little gem turned up for public consumption at Belmont Park the other afternoon We found it conducive to indigestion Racegoers who complain about the short seven furlong walk from Queens Village to Belmont Park might take some comfort in considering the inconveniences of English racegoers who manage to get to their tracks in goodsized crowds Thousands walked at least five miles and many walked as much as eight to attend the recent meeting at Ascot AscotNot Not to make too sharp a point of those L JR R trains standing idle at the very portals of this world of tomorrow track eh John C Clarks announcement that the army air commands lease on a portion of Hialeah Parks property is to expire November 15 at which date the Miami Jockey Clubs course is to be vacated occurs as something rather significant it seems to imply that Hialeah entertains hopes the situation will permit operation of the track during the winter season of 194344 This has generated a good deal of excitement among the racing fraternity as a ray of hope hopeClark Clark by the way is one of the staunchest advocates of regraded overnight purse values with no decrease in minimum and accompanying breeders awards It seems entirely safe to say such a program will be adopted by the Miami Jockey Club if it is at all possible when racing may be resumed there thereLa La Reigh the crack filly whose racing services Mr and Mrs John Hertz leased to Tony Pelleteri exhibited improvement oyer her Pimlico Oaks effort in the Acorn The rangy daughter of Count Gallahad by the way had a black eye after the Oaks the result of being struck by a clod Possibly that stopped her A similar experience though one with less colorful result made Galactic appear slower than he is actually leaving the gate in Pimlicos Nursery At any rate La Reigh performed most creditably of those Acorn entrants who also are engaging in the Coaching Club American Oaks OaksA A victory for La Reigh in that mile and a half filly classic would be another bright feather in the Hertz cap as bloodstock breeders Nobody much wanted La Reigh when she was a yearling either it appears Perhaps Baroque the colt Sammy Smith acquired for Victor Emanuel at Stoner Creek after rejecting the phenomenal Count Fleet would be of stakes caliber himself excepting for his knees The Counts sturdy suckling brother incidentally has been named Count Speed
