Mintlock First to Wire In Tomasello at Suffolk SuffolkThrong Throng of 34368 on Hand for Holiday Sport at Boston Oval OvalEAST EAST BOSTON Mass May 30 After a bitterly waged stretch battle Charles Rufis Ohioowned Mintlock scored a driv ¬ ing head victory in the seventh running of the 5000 Tomasello Memorial Handicap at Suffolk Downs today before a holiday throng of 34368 patrons In the tight finish H Guy Bedwells Sollure and Pine Tree Farms Valdina Alpha hit the wire at the end of the six furlongs in a dead heat for second honors Irving Gushens Diego Red Mrs Tilyou Christophers favored and topweighted Doublrab Dr W I Lunts Valdina Punch and Lyle Phillips Tetra Rock followed the placed horses to the final marker in that order orderWell Well ridden by Jimmy Brennan who was completing his second winning trip of the day Mintlock stepped the distance over the fast track in 111 111Doublrab Doublrab flattered with a brief display of early speed but he was soon displaced as pacemaker by Diego Red who charged up fast on the inside to take command Sollure also was a keen contender during the opening quarter mile and at the upper turn Doublrab was third while Mintlock was no better than fifth and on the ex ¬ treme outside outsideDiego Diego Red continued to show the way to the final turn but Doublrab moved up stoutly and went to the front by a head margin near the furlong pole with Diego Red a length in advance of Mintlock Valdina Alpha was also very much in the thick of the battle and the latter then came to the wire closely lapped with Mint lock getting the nod in the last stride Sollure held on well and Valdina Alpha also closed gamely to finish on equal terms with the former while Diego Red dropped back to fourth and Doublrab was a falter ¬ ing fifth
