REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan Suffolk Downs Demonstration Twilight Tear Still Filly Boss Hindu Kush Looks Like Runner TwoYearOld Battle in Trernont TrernontNEW NEW YORK N Y June 9 In Boston a group of racings cultured hoodlums became incensed at the disquali ¬ fication of Bayport in the seventh race on Thursday and staged a demonstration that in purpose was in no way remindful of the Bos ¬ ton tea party It could have been worse for there was an occasion in France where an in ¬ furiated mob once at ¬ tempted to burn down the grandstand These outbursts are deplora ¬ ble of course but like the tirow 0 LI popbottles at ball games and fist fights at hockey they quickly pass and are forgotten A few rowdies in ¬ censed a number sufficient to bring about a disturbance at Suffolk Downs Threats were made against the stewards and it was fortunate that no bodily hard came to these men who must made decisions as their observations and experience dictate This is by no means the first time racing stewards have been threat ¬ ened We recall one occasion when the late E C Smith a small man walked right through a milling gang that had threatened to tear him apart I will give the dirty cowards their chance he said and though pale as death he walked right through them Not a hand was raised against him Had he added bum sports to his other re ¬ marks he would have covered it completely Stewards umpires and referees are paid to make decisions The Suffolk stewards ac ¬ cording to all records were justified in disqualifying Bayport and the cops were more than justified in picking up the mob ringleaders who probably would not know how to call a race if they had to and who were guided only by the factthat they had lost a bet betLong Long Island racing fans are still in a stew about the failure of the gate in the Seaside Handicap on Wednes ¬ day and in which Breezing Home ran the full length of the course follow ¬ ing the declaration of a false start Instead of making up their own minds the stewards put the matter up to the trainer Matt Brady and he made the decision that his horse should he started The public natur ¬ ally had no voice The inconsistency in these matters is one for the books True had there not been a false start Breezing Home might have been out of the money Then again he might have been a winner for well we recall some ten years ago that the filly Watch Her trained by Max Ilirsch ran away before the start of a race and covered some four and a half miles before she was caught by a policeman and returned to Belmont Park In those days there was no though of scratching a runaway if he had gone to the post Of late years the stewards do whatever they think best and have now reached the point where they courteously ask the trainer of the horse if the runaway should be a starter Watch Her be ¬ came something of a miracle racer when she was returned to win that race But we cannot recall one since and to protect the public a horse such as Breezing Home should have been scratched regardless of the trainers decision decisionPlucky Plucky Maud was a surprise winner over Louis B Mayers Whirlabout in the Dela ¬ ware Oaks on Thursday Only two others started namely Everget and Donitas First While a good filly Plucky Maud has been no match for Twilight Tear in her races to date and although in receipt of six pounds her defeat of Whirlabout narrows the threeyearold filly race to Twilight Tear and Durazna Twilight Tear is undoubt ¬ edly one of the best threeyearold fillies to come up in many a season but as we stated a few days back her claim to the title will not be a clear one until she has defeated Durazna the miss who twice last season won races from the fleet Occupy There is no doubt in our mind that sone time during the summer months Ben Jones will send Twilight Tear out to contest the Issue with the best of the colts Miss Keeneland will soon be back to join her illustrious stablemate from Calumet and if this pair can dispose of Durazna they have just about every stake for their sex and division in the Chicago area at their mercy mercyThe The only stake event before the Shcvlin a week from tomorrow at Aqueduct is the Tremont to be run on Wednesday With each succeed ¬ ing1 contest the twoyearolds give indication of high class and the Tremont is certain to add to that belief Flood Town convincing win ¬ ner of the National Stallion is ono of the eligibles and it would not be surprising if in this Johnstown colL Lt Edward J Lasker has one of the real runners of the current season Col C V Whitney holds a strong hand for not only has he Jeep who ran second but also BurgelArab and Hindu Kush two recent winners BurgelArab is highly regarded but it may be that Hindu Kush a bay colt by Mahmoud out of Frilette by Man o War will develop into one of the best twoyearolds of the year Another who must be given full con ¬ sideration is William Zieglcr Jrs Esteem Many other powerful sta ¬ bles such as those of William Helis Longcnamps Farms Greentree Sta ¬ ble Studi George D Wiciener Belair Stud i i T 1i n t i slers for the Tremont and it npv haej ijp as a face tiat will go far rjl pointing out abe
