Iron Shot Thrilling Nose Victor In Aqueducts Hitchcock Chase Widener Racer Gets Up to Nip Invader After Making Bobble Taking Last Fence FenceAQUEDUCT AQUEDUCT L I N Y June 13 The 6000 Hitchcock Steeplechase provided a thrilling contest at Aqueduct this after ¬ noon One which must have gained new adherents to the throughthefield sport as young Miss Ella Wideners gallant gray gelding Iron Shot survived a nearly fatal bobble at the last fence to score by a slim nose over Mrs F Ambrose Clarks invader at the end of this jaunt of two miles and onehalf over 17 obstacles Rokeby Stables Caddie was third another two and onehalf lengths back and four lengths before Montpeliers Bavarian G H Bost wicks Bridlespur completed the field an ¬ other 15 lengths back at the wire wireA A crowd of 21123 turned out in bright torrid weather to witness this third run ¬ ning of the Hitchcock which is a memorial to Thomas Hitchcock Sr one of Americas greatest developers of chasers They were treated to a cleanlyrun race in which only the winner so much as made a bobble dur ¬ ing the two and onehalf turns of the track trackN N Brown had Iron Shot surprisingly close to the pace all the way never being worse than third and never so much as four lengths back of the leader in fact despite his top weight of 163 pounds Iron Shot was a half length before Invader to whom he was giving 21 pounds at the end of a half mile Brown then eased him slightly and Bridlespur took the lead go ¬ ing over the water jump before the stands the first time with Invader a close second and Iron Shot running third while Ba ¬ varian and Caddie were well back in that order orderInvader Invader Takes Over OverBridlespur Bridlespur held the lead for about three quarters of a mile then Invader took over and Iron Shot remained in third place Taking the water jump the second time Invader led slightly before Bridlespur with Iron Shot a couple of lengths back and Bavarian and Caddie were still trailing There was considerable cheering as the field approached this obstacle the second time most of the crowd thinking it was the finish finishAs As Bridlespur dropped back a beaten horse going to the far turn the final time Invader took over the lead Iron Shot challenged and Caddie moved up briskly from the rear ranks They were rather closely grouped going round the long turn and taking the next to thaJast obstacle obstacleInvader Invader and Iron Shot took the last fence almost on a line but the big gray stumbled to his knes and almost went down Theer was a noisy gasp from the fans who had made him an oddson favorite but the son of Chance Shot re ¬ covered quickly and fighting on gamely just pushed his nose to the fore in the final stride strideIron Iron Shot earned 4780 as his owners share of the stakes with another 180 breeders premium going to the estate of Joseph E Widener This was his third victory in his last four starts and es ¬ tablished Iron Shot as the steeplechase champion at least for the present presentGreentree Greentree Stables Dustman suffered the fate that has befallen most of the oddson favorites at this meeting when he suc ¬ cumbed by a length to Lazy F Ranchs Jovine in the Norse King Purse best of the offerings on the flat Jovine who had won his last start at Belmont was second choice and gave Ted Atkinson a double that hustling rider having been aboard Nap in the second race Captains Aide came from last place to be a distant third at the end of this mile and a sixteenth test while the pacemaking Comenow was a staggering fourth before Topsy Sue and Free Dutch the only other starters Jovine paid 890 and was clocked a mediocre 146
