REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan ThreeYearOld Picture Changes Bounding Home vs By Jimminy Big Bond Sale on Dwyer Day Detroit Fire Fiendish Crime CrimeNEW NEW YORK N Y June 20 Not so many weeks ago we all were talk ¬ ing of the outcome of the Belmont Stakes meeting of Pensive and Platter In the Preakness it was fairly close with Pensive the winner but many of us still thought that the Widener colt would be returned winner of the mile and onehalf race which is the third leg of the Triple Crown But along came the Ziegler horse Bounding Home and he did some high and fancy bound ¬ ing with Pensive second and Platter in the ruck Although we did not know it at the time that was but the start of a new feud for in the Gotham Handicap at seven fur ¬ longs By Jimminy had defeated Lucky Draw proclaimed by some to be the best threeyearold in the land Then just this last Saturday By Jimminy who is owned by Alfred P Parker won the Shevlin from Stir Up Stymie Who Goes There and other topnotchers of a division that certainly is short of sufficient quality performers In fact we cannot recall a season where the threeyearold colts have been of such low quality Regardless of that a new feud has developed and fans are very divided as to what the outcome will be when Bounding Home hooks up with By Jimminy JimminyBounding Bounding Home skipped the Shev lin because his connections thought the distance might be a trifle short for him In doing that they added interest to the 50000 added Dwyer which at a mile and a quarter will be the feature event at Aqueduct this weekend Not only are Bounding Home and By Jimminy eligible but they are likely to be opposed by some of the best threeyearolds now in training on Long Island It should be a grand race Neither Bounding Home in winningthe Belmont nor By Jimminy in taking the Shevlin raced in time that showed them as outstanding speedsters But the race rather than the time is what counts the most and this Saturdays Dwyer should prove a very definite factor in pointing out the real pre ¬ tender to the threeyearold crown It is indeed fitting that these two horses should meet in a race so tra ¬ ditional as the Dwyer which was in ¬ augurated back in 1887 For they will be running for a grand cause as everyone who views this race will have done so because they have bought a War Bond It may be that anywhere from 10000000 to 20 000000 from the sale of War Bonds will be realized realizedTomorrows Tomorrows Gazelle even with its 10000 added failed to draw either Twilight Tear or Durazna to say nothing of Miss Keene land There has been much written as to the outcome of a race between Twilight Tear and such colts as Pensive Platter Lucky Draw and now Bounding Home and By Jimminy But the threeyearold filly situation holds just as much interest in the meeting of Twilight Tear and Durazna These fillies should stage a dingdong battle After they meet and settle the question it will be time enough to bring into actuality the meetings which will de ¬ termine whether one or the other is capable of coping with the colts who be ¬ yond Pensive in the Derby and Preakness have just about been whacking the day ¬ lights out of one another since the season started True the colts may be nothing to rave about but it must be admitted even if it is as a result of inconsistency they have been staging some mighty good races racesIt It was surprising indeed to read that a former groom had admitted to the Detroit police that he had started the fire which cost the lives of one man and 31 horses The vast majority of grooms love the horses in their charge and on many oc ¬ casions have entered burning barns at the risk of their own lives to save thoroughbreds There is a question whether this man should be charged with murder or arson If a first de ¬ gree murder verdict could be re ¬ turned it would certainly be the punishment due him for one of the most vicious crimes in the history of racing It may be that it would be difficult to obtain such a verdict as his act was not prcmedidated in the loss of a mans life But even so premeditation in this case gave way to a revenge that cost the lives ot many horses Whether it is murder or arson or both if this mans guil is proved he should be sent away tw life He has been implicated in othet fires prior to this one and to leaV him at large is just inviting his vi 4 iousness and his revenge to crop ouv at a later date
