Churchill Downs Meeting Was Best Ever Conducted ConductedWagering Wagering Up 100 Pet Over Last Year 103000 Saw Derby Card CardLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky May 20 The 19day Churchill Downs meeting which came to an end Saturday proved the most success ¬ ful in the history of the colorful plant despite a number of hampering factors that included rain every day and an in ¬ adequate totalisator totalisatorAccording According to Col Matt J Winn the average mutuel handle for the meeting was 895000 which was more than an increase of 100 per cent over last year Winn said the Derby crowd was better than 103000 without counting those working the con ¬ cessions not to mention those who annual ¬ ly slip over and under the fences on the big day dayOn On two Saturdays of the meeting ex ¬ cluding Derby Day 25000 turfites poured through the gates and Winn was especially elated at the large number of racing fans who remained on after the Derby and didnt leave the track until after the last races had Tjeen run runThe The first experience of Churchill Downs with the totalisator was both encouraging and disappointing The tote people were unable to furnish the track with an ade ¬ quate supply of machines at the beginning and when some of the machines could not be operated on several days and especially on Derby Day thousands of fans were shut out from wagering activity activityLater Later a number of the machines were moved to the current Lincoln Fieldat Hawthorne meeting and when the fans continued to tax the plant this condition did not improve
