JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton 1 1Mr Mr Busher Looms Bargain at Record Price Shaffer Optimistic of Keeneland Auctions Miss Mommy May Ship to Delaware for Oaks Some Notes on Strange Case of Algasir AlgasirLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky June 23 Visitors 23Visitors from the East seem really quite impressed by Maine Chances lively colt Mr Busher and we take it that racegoers m the Middle West may have a treat coming when Jimmy Smith saddles him for the rich Arlington Futurity on July 17 He will be of particular interest in this area for many of us have the highest opinion of his sister Busher It has to be admitted that not many three yearold fillies go about giving Armed weightonthescale and beat him in track record time for a mile and a quarter Chat ¬ ting of Mr Busher here recently Edward S Moore recalled that he owned the colt momentarily in the Idle Hour transaction and he observed that It is nice he has turned out so well If Mr Busher is a big one that got away it was for a record sum of 50000 as weanling It now appears he was well bought even at that price which is a good thing for the sale of untried colts and fillies There is an old superstition about brothers and sisters to cham ¬ pions you know In this connection it might also be noted that the Gaekwar of Baroda paid a world record sum of 117 600 for Sayajirao as a yearling largely because he was a brother to Dante then had the satisfaction of seeing him prove to be a bargain Among other things Sayajirao won the St Leger of Jiy 1 1 Talk of the yearling sales naturally leads to all sorts of conjectures about the trend of the market E E Dale Shaffer of the Breeders Sales Company was asked for his opinion and he said I think that the averages will approximate those of last season Purses and stakes have been increased and the values of horsesintraining have not been marked down It seems to this observer that the yearlings approved for the Keeneland Sales really are more Select than in past years Perhaps the new pen ¬ alty has something to do with it Another factor which should benefit the local auctions is the introduction of twoyearold colt and filly events for them at Keeneland in the fall of 49 Each is expected to represent a rebate of about 520000 for the lucky bidders It is probable these races will be carded a week previous to the Breeders Futurity FuturityShaffer Shaffer mentions a possibility that Miss Mommy will be shipped from Chicago to have a go at the Eastern fillies in the 17500 Delaware Oaks This event is to be decided at a mile and an eighth on July 5 at the swish little park near Wilming ¬ ton We shall not attempt to guess where Miss Mommy will be rated at the end of the season but she has a good deal of dash and a degree of color Usually Miss Mommy is on her way into the turn while the starting bell is ringing and she does not discourage easily She is quite jealous Shaffer observes and raises a row if visitors turn from her stall to make over one of her stablemates George Odom always has liked her as he trained her dam Farmerette to win important New York stakes for the Virginia sportswoman Mrs W Plunkett Stewart Farmerette now is rearing a sister to Miss Mommy whom Char ¬ ley Kenney considers one of the best of Coldstreams 1948 crop of foals The mare now is in foal to Goya II in whom Shaffer is interested interestedThe The strangest things happen For instance there is the A C Ernst estates Algasir He could not beat 48 under a stick in morning spins down the Widener chute Indeed he had done nothing at all spectacular since he was broken and was rather a weedy individual so he was castrated This made him ineligible for the Belmoiit Futurity He then proceeded to amaze everyone by set ¬ ting a world record of 5053 in his first start a maiden race on the United Hunts card at Belmont Park A blanket might have covered the first three so that the third horse tied the old record It seems that Algasir is the antithesis of a morning glory in that he is an indif ¬ ferent work horse who very sensibly prefers to run when it is profitable He is by Sir Gallahad III who is 28 out of the Equipoise mare Alpoise who is windy and his bloodlines are irreproachable If it matters Algasir is in the Arlington and Washington Futurities the Hopeful and the East View ViewTurf Turf ana Crispin Oglebay is among the members of the syndicate purchasing an interest in Alibhai Mrs Dale Shaf ¬ fer attended the running of Arlingtons rich Princess Doreen Two syndicates have been formed to purchase a sire now serving in The Blue Grass Norman W Churchs expensive colt Speculation is a candidate for the Classic and the American Derby Spotted Beauty is in foal to Goya H Duke Dahlstrom wrote his first Arlington condition book before he could be quite sure what horses would be on the grounds the second before knowing the form of those competing for purses in the first With Pleasure may return to Chicago from the West Coast later in the summer
