Kentucky Colonels Hold Annual Derby Eve Affair AffairGov Gov Wetherby of Kentucky Makes Address of Welcome to Gathering GatheringCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 Easily the outsanding Derby eve social event in Louisville last night was the sixteenth annual dinner of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels at the Ken ¬ tucky Hotel HotelMore More than 500 colonels and their dis ¬ tinguished guests turned out for the gala formal affair Lawrence Wetherby gover ¬ nor of the commonwealth of Kentucky and a Kentucky colonel of course keynoted the evening when he made a brief address of welcome to Louisville and the state of Kentucky Wetherby urged outofstate visitors to prolong their stay after the Derby running and visit the many beauty spots for which Kentucky is world famous and also invited everyone back for next year yearAmong Among those present were several United States senators including James H Duff of Pennsylvania Lyndon B Johnson of Texas Russell Lon of Louisiana and Earle C Clements of Kentucky Leslie Biffle secretary of the Senate and Feltom M Johnston secretary of the Senate ma ¬ jority also attended attendedTribute Tribute was paid to the national com ¬ manding officer of the Colonels General J Fred Miles who did not attend because of his health General Miles has been re ¬ cuperating from a riding accident he sus ¬ tained last year yearOne One of the highlights of the evening was the traditional julep parade and the equally traditional drinking to the health of the Governor and to the state of Ken ¬ tucky by the assembled guests The party was a sellout and every seat in the spacious Terrace Room of the Kentucky Hotel was taken Colonels from coast to coast and border to border were announced as they entered the room the hospitality being of the Old Kentucky kind kindRadio Radio singer Phil Regan acted as master of ceremonies ceremoniesAnother Another notable and traditional party at the Kentucky Hotel was the annual Derby eve press party hosted by G B Brownie Leach director of public relations at Churchill Downs and who officially repre ¬ sented Bill Corum and the Churchill Downs executive staff More than 250 newsmen radio and television personalities enjoyed cocktails and a buffet dinner
