Ed Soule Dies of Heart Attack at Oakland Calif CalifWas Was First Presiding Steward at Golden Gate Once Raced Stable StableGOLDEN GOLDEN GATE FIELDS Albany Calif May 3 Ed Soule who has been identified with racing in various capacities for a half century passed away in the Merritt Hos ¬ pital in Oakland Friday night He suc ¬ cumbed to a heart attack at the age of 84 84Soule Soule who was active in the promotion and construction of Golden Gate Fields and was this tracks first presiding steward has been associated with many varied phases of the thoroughbred sport In addition to hav ¬ ing been a racing official he once owned a large stable of horses was a betting com ¬ missioner and handicappcr of renown and was advisor to owners and trainers of many large stables stablesHe He served in the stewards stand in the early days of the present Santa Anita was Holloywood Parks first director of racing and later served there in an advisory ca ¬ pacity pacityIn In his earlier days on the turf his partner was John Sanford master of Amsterdam Stud Soules horses raced in New York and also at the old Tijuana track and they were trained by the famous horseman H W Frisco Hoag Among the thoroughbreds he owned were Slieveconard Polythia Ed wina and Paddywhack all stakes horses The latter was fatually injured at Tijuana and Soule had him buried on a farm just this side of the Mexican border where he had a monument erected to his memory memorySoule Soule is survived by his widow and a daughter Mrs C Dudley De Velbiss whose husband is a director of the Pacific Turf Club He made his home in Beverly Hills
