Parading Lady Rallies to Win Acorn Flashes High Speed In Closing Stages Bernborough Filly Draws Out Fast Once She Gains Command in Belmont Race RaceBy By BOB HORWOOD Stall Correspondent BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 3 Joe W Browns Parading Lady shot out of the pack at the furlong pole in the twentysecond running of the Acorn Stakes and drew out to triumph by a length and a half over King Ranchs Sufie Mrs Walter M Jeffords Lily White was a neck farther back after taking the lead in the stretch while Foxcatcher Farms Faberose was another half length out of the money Parading Lady was the favorite with the weekend crowd of 39850 that turned out in tangy spring weather paying 770 Sufie and Fabercse were almost equal sec ¬ ond choices in the field of 16 threeyear old fillies disputing the mile which was negotiated in a moderate 1 38 over a fast track trackParading Parading Lady is a daughter of the Aus ¬ tralian Bernborough from Polly Briar by Sun Briar and was bred by the wife of her New Orleans owner Her jockey Jimmy Hardinbrook was the only apprentice rider in the field and began his career at New Orleans last whiter Parading Lady earned 18650 as she took down the richest purse in the Acorns history and brought her total gleanings to 31345 It was her first stake victory but her sixth triumph in 13 starts three of which were unsuccessful attempts as a juvenile last year She was the first entirely satisfactory winning fa ¬ vorite of the day Doc Walker having to share his victory in the fourth event with Romantic Roman RomanLandmark Landmark Moves Into Lead LeadFaberose Faberose was first away at the start of the Acorn but Landmark quickly moved up on the inside to take command with Lily White taking over second place As they sped down the far side Landmark led Lily White by more than a length with the Foxcatcher pair Fuzzhead and Faberose racing as a team before Place Card Sufie was in ninth place at this stage with Parading Lady twelfth while Dinewisely and Semolina brought up the rear rearLandmark Landmark continued to lead around the far turn but Lily White surged up to be lapped on her while Sufie gained ground steadily and Parading Lady began to close I rapidly weaving her way between horses j Dinewisely began a move from the rear racing in the wake of Parading Lady while Faberose was going strongly with the lead ¬ ers as Fuzzhead dropped back backLandmark Landmark dropped back out of wind in the upper stretch leaving Lily White a length in front and giving every sign of providing the Jeffords family with its sec ¬ ond straight Acorn winner Sufie was going strongly on the outside however and it was her turn to look like a winner a few strides farther on when Parading Lady suddenly shot out of the pack The Bern borough filly took command with authority and went on to triumph by daylight Sufie outfinished Lily White in the final yards while Faberose hung a bit at the end but turned in an excellent effort Dinewisely also hung at the end after making up a world of ground from the half mile to the furlong poles polesNo No Excuse for Sufie SufieAfter After the race Bill Boland had no excuse to offer for Sufie while Eric Guerin who rode Faberose said I thought the race was just between Sufie and myself until Parading Lady came like a shot He ap ¬ parently didnt notice Lily White who also beat him himYoung Young Hardinbrook who will be 17 on May 27 and is a graduate of the quarter horse school said Parading Lady didnt have too much early speed but when she decided to run around the turn she really flew and went between horses I thought I was messing it up but she rated herself and laid it on in the stretch It was the Jacksonville Fla boys first stakes winner winnerC C T Chenerys Bakersfield found an opening halfway down the stretch in the first division of the Fayette Purse preced ¬ ing the Acorn and shot through to score by a head over Mrs Robert McGowan Smiths Sagittarius who apparently had the race won Sanford Stud Farms Little Falls also finished fast and was only a neck away and a nose before Alvin Unternyers Sea flash at the end of the six furlongs The latter had duelled with Sagittarius on the lead from the start Jimmy Grafs Tripoli the favorite was caught flatfooted at the start and seemed unwilling to go after horses turning in a dull effort Eric Guerin rode Bakersfield who paid 910 and was timed a moderate 112
