Forecast Bulky Field for Preakness As Many as14May Challenge Tim Tarn Saturday at Pimlico CalumetChamp Drills Handy Half Mile Jewels Reward In Sparkling Distance Work WorkBy By JOE HIRSCH PIMLICO Baltimore Md May 12 CalumetVTim Tarn hero of the recent Kentucky Derby went a handy halfmile in 50 over a sloppy strip this morning his first breeze since his arrival from Louis ¬ ville as a reminder to one and all as if any were needed that the wellmade son of Tom Fool and Two Lea is distinctly the colt to beat in Saturdays 82nd running of the historic Preakness Stakes StakesA A welcome sun beamed brilliantly from a sky of cloudless blue over this ancient Hilltop course as the tempo of Preakness activity stepped up sharply For despite Tim Tarns solid victory in the Derby the field for the middle jewel of racings Triple Crown may be the biggest since 1954 when 11 went to the post in a Preakness won by Hasty Road The 1 116 miles Preakness Prep here and the Withers Mile at Belmont Park this afternoon were expected to cast additional light on a cloudy situation but at the moment it appears as though as many as 15 horses could contest the Mary ¬ land Jockey Clubs significant mile send threesixteenths threesixteenthsLatest Latest Developments in Race RaceFollowing Following are the latest developments pertaining to the weekend Run for the BlackEyed Susans 1 Mrs Ada L Rices Talent Show ancl Edward Potter Jrs Plion first and third respectively in Saturdays Delaware Valley Stakes at Garden State Park arrived by van from Camden N J to participate un the Preakness The Crabgrass Stables Noureddin also checked in over the week ¬ end after an uneventful van trip from Churchill Downs where he finished a driv ¬ ing third in the Derby 2 Maine Chance Farms Jewels Reward the Derby favorite who finished fourth sparkled through i 316 miles work in 201 here on Sunday and appears to be coming up to Saturdays festivities in fine form Jockey Manuel Ycaza who will handle him in the Preakness came down from New York with Mrs Elizabeth Gra ¬ ham to work the handsome son of Jet Jewel The same stables Ebony Pearl ac ¬ companied Jewels Reward and also showed to excellent advantage in his move fin ¬ ishing perhaps a length behind but is a doubtful starter here this weekend 3 Mrs Anna Cannulis Chance it Tony a good sixth in the Derby was another who vanned in from Garden State Park over the Weekend to try the classic colts a sec ¬ ond time He is scheduled for a mile move tomorrow under Logan Batcheller who rode him at Louisville Going Fails to Faze Tim Tarn TarnLast Last nights heavy rains turned the track into a sea of slop this morning but Tim Tarn who proved he could handle just about any kind of strip in the Derby Trial and the Derby itself experienced little dif ¬ ficulty with the going Jimmy Jones is wellpleased with the way he is coming up to the Preakness and the colts coat under ¬ lines his trainers confidence with its healthy glow glowTim Tim Tarn like all the others who took the train from Louisville to Baltimore had a rough trip and was several days in re ¬ covering from the effects of the bouncing jostling ride But he has come around in fine order oyer the past few days and should be a better colt on Saturday for his Derby experience Jones plans to zip him another halfmile on Thursday to insure his speed since the Preakness is distinctly a speed horses race raceTrainer Trainer Ivan Parke was in New York to ¬ day to saddle Maine Chance Farms Liberty Ruler in the Withers but stable sources were generally elated with Jewels Rewards move on Sunday and feel he has every good chance of redeeming himself here this weekend after a somewhat disappointing showing in the Derby Over a fast track Jewels Reward was caught in fractions of 24 for the first quartermile 49 for the half 114 for the six furlongs 142 for the mile and the Preakness distance in 201 201Jewels Jewels Reward is basically more of a speed horse than Tim Tarn and should be laying immediately off the pace here on Saturday a position from which many colts in past years have gone on to win the Pim ¬ lico classic While he couldnt handle the off going at Churchill Downs it is to be remembered that Jewels Reward won last falls Pimlico Futurity big on a track turned slushy from the previous days snows Pimlico of course is a sandy track while the Derby strip has a good deal of clay to it and mud in Baltimore is dif ¬ ferent than mud in Louisville LouisvilleParke Parke was due back from New York to ¬ night and there is a possibility that he may bring Liberty Ruler along with him if that wellbred son of Nasrullah and Vagrancy should show well in the Withers WithersMrs Mrs Grahams Jet Alibi is still sidelined following a pre Derby injury while Ebony Pearl may be shipped to Lincoln Downs for the 25000 Hartford Handicap on Preak ¬ ness Day Thus if the stable is to start an entry the party of the second part is likely to be Liberty Ruler a colt with great po ¬ tential but still on the green side in his racing conduct conductSilky Silky Sullivan Goes Twice Around AroundRoss Ross Klipsteins Silky Sullivan who worked six furlongs here en Saturday in a handy 115 and galloped out the mile in 144 went twice around the mile track in a moderately brisk gallop this morning Trainer Reggie Cornell points out that the Derby is one of the very few bad races himself has ever turned inand is con ¬ fident Silky will be a lof closer to tke leaders at the end of the Preakness PreaknessBill Bill Shoemaker has confirmed that Silky was slipping and sliding on the slick Churchill Downs strip Cornell notes that Silky fared well all winter over the deep and sandy training track at Santa Anita and that he should be right at home here at Pimlico A big horse who needs a lot of work Silky is due for a mile move on Wednesday and will probably come back with a sharper blowout on Friday morning I Trainer Charley Whittingham dapper in a gray flannel suit and matching fedora checked in from California last night ac ¬ companied by Ralph Neves who was to ride Llangollens Gone Fishih in todays prep Whittingham wasnt enthusiastic over the condition of the track since Gone Fishin doesnt seem to want off going in way way shape of form formHowever However the homebred son of the South American Endeavour II is a tough wirey little colt who almost always gives you a good race and he has recovered well from the arduous postDerby train trip Gone Fishin finished eighth at Louisville but was second at the end of a mile Though he probably prefers a track a little firmer than the Pimlico strip if he can handle tile going here this week end his speed could make him a real threat threatNoureddin Noureddin who worked a crisp 7 fur fongs in 128 at Churchill Downs on Fri ¬ day had a good trip up from Derbytown by van and looked in excellent coat in his box this morning Trainer Slim Pierce who accompanied the remainder of his horses to Chicago over the week end is due in from the Windy City by plane tonight and is expected to gallop Noureddin to ¬ morrow morning morningNoureddin Noureddin had the worst of it and ran one of the biggest races of all n the Derby coming outside of seven horses to close closeContinued Continued on Page FiftyThree See Bulky field Saturday In 82nd Preakness Stakes StakesFavored Favored Tim Tarn and Challenger Jewels Reward in Strong Moves MovesContinued Continued from Page Tues Tuesgreat great gobs of ground through the stretch Hell have to be much closer to the pace on Saturday than he was in Louisville but he was running with Jewels Reward on the front end through most of the Wood Me ¬ morial and apparently has the ability to stay with the leaders A colt who doesnt need much training hell probably complete his Preakness preparation with a sharp blowout Thursday ThursdaySunny Sunny Blue Farms Lincoln Road who made every step of the pace in the Derby worked six furlongs in 114 between races Saturday and trainer Vic Sovinski is pleased with the With Pleasure colts con ¬ dition Sovinski is well aware that he holds a particularly strong hand for the Preak ¬ ness since Lincoln Road is the speed horse of the race and for the last eight run ¬ nings every contestant who hassled into the stretch has gone on to win tiie Black Eyed Susans SusansTalent Talent Show and Plion both ran well enough In the Delaware Valley on Satur ¬ day to merit a crack at the Preakness Tal ¬ ent Show an Olympia colt with the lick of his famed daddy beat the speedy Ive Got Rhythm by threequarters of a length for all the money in the 6furlong dash run in 110 Trainer Jimmy Conway was very high on this one upon his arrival in Kentucky from Florida but Talent Show disappointed in the preDerby Stepping Stone Prior to that you may recall Tal ¬ ent Show was a good third to Tim Tarn and Jewels Reward in the Flamingo FlamingoPlion Plion won the Blue Grass at Keeneland in the mud but his interests thought him over his head in the Derby and decided dis ¬ cretion was the better part of valor Satur ¬ day he lost considerable ground swinging into the stretch then closed fastest of all on the outside to be beaten about two lengths Willie Lester who handled Talent Show astutely at Garden State is likely to ride him back in the Preakness while Dave Erb who was up in the Blue Grass is scheduled to pilot Plion this week end endA A A A APreakness Preakness Notes Ben Jones the general manager of the Calumet racing stable ar ¬ rived from Kentucky over the week end and was out on a pony this morning Ralph i Neves returns to California tonight and will ride at Hollywood Park through Friday when he flies back to Pimlico for the mount on Gone Fishin in the Preakness Trainer Jimmy Hechter confirmed this morning that Powhatan Farms Michore is to start in the Preakness barring the un ¬ foreseen The photographers were out in full force today snapping pictures of leading candidates in a wide variety of poses A pretty young thing held a fishing rod near Gone Fishin stall while Jimmy Jones was shot asleep under a cardboard balloon which indicated he was dreaming of Calumets sixth Preakness win Mrs Liz Lunn is literally Gone Fishin has been angling in Florida since the Derby DerbyShes Shes due here to root for Gone Fishin later this week Mrs Graham returned to New York after Jewels Rewards Sunday work will be down from Gotham in a day or two Chris Rogers who is riding in some of the best form of his career is out every morning to give trainer Vic Sovinski an assist with Lincoln Road Jimmy Comyay at Garden State with the main division of the Rice Stable wont be here until Thursday since Talent Show is fit and ready to run
