FORMER RACING KAN IN NEW BERTH. Roy Carrnthers. who was a prominent figure at the Oakland race track in the days when ra-ing flourished in California, has been promoted fr an assistant manager to manager of the Palace Hotel at San Francisco. Mr. Carrnthers was an intimate friend and associate of the late Riley Grannan. whose spectacular and successful plunges in betting rings all over the country created such a sensation ten or fifteen years ago. Mr. Carruthers. who is a man of pleasing personality, has made a swift and brilliant career in the world of San Franciscos hotels. During the Exposition year he has been actively connected with the greatest influx San Franciscothotels have ever dealt with, day in. day out. Directly Mr. Carrnthers became connected with the Palace, he devoted his energy toward making that hotel the social c-uter of the city. His efforts have resulted in making tlie Palace the Mecca of San Franciscans for the larger social affairs. The last years record of banquets and gala balls given at the hotel is proof of this. The after-theater and dinner dansants he introduced became popular with society, of which Mr. Carruthers himself is a well-konwn member. Mr. Carruthers will take complete charge of affairs at the Palace at once.
