AN EXAMERICANS STUD IN ENGLAND Marked Success of Major Waldorf Astor in English Racing and Breeding There are few private stnils in England more select than Major Astors at Cliveden It has only been in existence a few years but the record is remarkable including as it does the victories of Winkipop in the One Thousand Guineas and Sunny Jane in the Oaks and the former also won the Coronation Stakes at Ascot and the Nassau and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood Magpie succumbed by a head only to Gay Crusader in the Two Thousand Guineas and Blink was second to Gainsborough the winner curiously enough being in each case a stable companion Magpie was only sold to Aus ¬ tralia because of the unexpected suspension of racing last summer and it was probably owing to the uncertainty prevailing that some of the Cliveden yearlings were sold in the preceding season among them Magpies halfbrother Jack Point which bids fair to make up into a good horse Blink was retained and compensated for his Blue Riband failure by winning the Princess of Wales States after which he fell lame but the contretemps can ¬ not have been serious for he still goes out with the Manton team It was reported that the colt had broken down Among other victories credited to the light blue and pink sash were those of Trois Temps in the Jockey Club Stakes and North Derby of First Spear in the Bretby Stakes Falmouth Stakes Nassau Stakes and Park Hill Stakes of Good and Gay in the Bretby and Bessborough Stakes and Pilliwinkie in the Ascot Derby Mirador which was third for the St Leger won the Kingsclere Stakes and North Derby and Scoltie the Red Rose Stakes at Manchester Now in the same colors Ave have Buchan winner this season of three races and so far undefeated indeed the colt is by many sound judges regarded as the best twoyearold of the year Sprocket has only run once and Lord Basil nnd Lady Baba have yet to make their ap ¬ pearance but if rumor tells a true tale the son of Popinjay is something out of the common commonMARES MARES AT CLIVEDEN STUD STUDIncluding Including the two recent additions Sunny Jane which has been mated with Chaucer and Bukowina which has visited Harry of Hereford there are now thirteen mares at the Cliveden Stud Conjure now twentythree years old is the clam of Third Trick Winkipop and Pilliwinkie she is barren to Junior and has been sent to Clarissimns Popinjay ac ¬ quired from Lord Rosebery has produced good win ¬ ners in Good and Gay Popingaol Magpie and Jack Point and has a brown filly foal by Bayardo She has visited Lemberg Maid of the Mist dam of Hamoaze and Sunny Jane has a bay colt by Sun star and goes to him again Third Trick dam of First Spear has a bay filly by Lemberg and is mated witli Snnstar Wiukipop dam of Blink a bay filly by Polymelns and has been tried witli Kwang Su Other mares at the stud are Mouchette First Spear barren and Hamoaze dam of Buchan which has missed to Tracery I can trace no rela ¬ tive as yet to follow the twoyearold Good and Gay has a bay filly by Swynford and Popingaol a bay filly by Valens These seven foals have al ¬ ready been named as follows Pompadour Popinjay filly W A A C Good and Gay filly Plymstock Winkipop filly Petite Mouche Mouchette filly Long Suit Third Trick filly Craigau Eran Maid of the Mist colt and Vanrienne Popingaol filly The yearlings ready to go into training are Glendce by Bayardo Maid of the Mist Cold Steel by Spear ¬ mint Thin Ice Tea Tray by The Tetrarch Good and Gay all in the Derby of 1920 Plunkette by Prince Palatine Mouchette Pinprick by Torpoint Third Trick both in the Oaks and Grandee by Spanish Prince Conjure The entries for the Derby and Oaks for 1920 are by the way an appreciable advance on next years with the king represented in both events but the Duke of Portland still ab ¬ stains from patronizing the Epsom meeting Vigi ¬ lant in London Sportsman
