REMARKABLE HORSE BARGAIN Yearling Which Cost 100 the Dam of Gaga Austrian Derby Winner BY E E COUSSELL COUSSELLLONDON LONDON England March 9 Before the stock of Isonomy had made any reparation on the English turf one of his daughters from Red Flag failed to sell at auetion and was subsequently bought for 100 by Mr II Arnold She was a small filly well under fifteen hands high She was turned out for over twelve months in the hope she would grow As a threeyearold after a fall when she broke her knees she was mated with a big son of Hermit named Zealot and sold to Mr John Porter for 900 The next season the Master of Kingsclere after breeding a colt sent the filly now named Red Hot to be bred to Galopin The following year the mare and her colt were sold to Austria The colt was named Gaga He was un ¬ beaten and won numerous races including the Austrian Derby At the stud he was remarkably successful and sired the winners of over 500 races and 025000 He was head of the Austrian sire list in 1898 1898Red Red Hot came back to England to be mated with Galopin again The result was another colt named Ganache He was an unbeaten twoyearold and at three years won three races including the St Leger Ganache earned nearly 45000 on the turf He also went to the stud and while not such an outstanding success as Gaga did well as a sire of winners winnersRed Red Hot was by Isonomy Red Flag by Lord Lyon Rouge Rose dam of the famous Bend Or which won the Derby and 89590 in stakes He sired Ormonde Kendal Bona Vista Martagon Radium and the winners of 435 flat races worth 927835 Rouge Rose has three other small win ¬ ners and about half a dozen daughters who never saw a race course Most of them were successful at the stud The moral of the story apparently is not to despise any small mare so long as she i well bred Too many of them have bred winners of the highest class Doris the dam of Sunstar being the outstanding example of recent years
