The holds of San Diego are crowded wilh visitors and each incoming train is bringing more. The Tijuana Derby of Sunday is drawing the lovers of the thoroughbreds. Fine weather prevails and the border course promises to bouse its greatest week-end crowd of the meeting. Although no finish yesterday was clo-er than a head l he sport was thoroughly enjoyed and consistent racing was the order. Two pronounced favorites were successful, these being Point to Point, the son of Jack Point, from the L. T. Whitebill stable, which accounted for the second race at three-quarters, and Billy Lane, the Reformation gelding from the string of J. Alexandra, the winner of the feature race, the fifth, at one mile and seventy yards. Running right back to the good form he has been exhibiting here, Billy Lane made his move at the head of the stretch. He caught Rifle, the pacemaker, then forged ahead and jockey Bower had him a two-length winner at the end. The obstreperous Rifle, which has notoriously bad post manners, was on Ills good behavior yesterday and starter Morrissey sent Ihe field away with a delay of only a half minute. As is his manner of running Rifle went right to the front and held his lead until they turned for home. At this point he more than met his match in Billy Lane. Piedra took third place. In the race won by Point to Poiut, jockey Hun-tamer had the mount and it was his first success of the three he scored for the afternoon. Point to Point was so well thought of that the public accepted two to five in the books, while the mu-tuels paid the short price of one to three. The horse which finished second in this race, -which was at three-quarters, furnished a surprise. This was Squirr"l Hawkins, which was in the field. The Flying Squirrel colt ran in vastly improved form and. although he was no mat-h for the winner, he was right there all the way. Lotta speed was third. An echo from the "Jungle Circuit" was beard in the fourth race at one and a sixteenth miles when P.assano Boy, which can run with a vengeance on ■ half-mile track, proved easily best and won by two and a half lengths. The veteran jockey Charlie Gross bad the mount, it being his second winner of the afternoon, for in the opener he caught the judges eye with Joe Underwood. The last two races of the program gave jockey Iluntamer opportunity to increase his long string of victories, for he rode both Arctic King, which accounted for the seventh at five-eighths, aid Black Top. the winner of the concluding dash at five and a half furlongs. Arctic King prohably was much better than anything in his race and he turned in a high-class performance, for he was in repeated trouble, yet lie won by three-quarters of a length from Huron II.. himself some sprinter. In winning the last race with Black Top. jockey Hiintamer took the Ormondale gelding right to tiie front and. although Huntamer was required to ride him hard. Black Top was a winner by a head from Thirty Seven. Review was third. The favorite. Harry Burgoyne. began slowly and made up much ground. The veteian horseman. Jim Curl, who owns the promising colt Lantados, was taken to a San Diego hospital today. He is suffering from a stomach ailment. Albert Rohrback, New York horseman, is negotiating for a contract on the services of jockey M. Slaughter. Rohrback desires to sign Slaughter for the Crow Toint Stable of Boston.
